Q: Umlauts, special letters - problem with El Capitan?
Hello.
I have lost the ability to write umlauts and other special characters from my bluetooth US-keyboard.
Previously, I could write the letter A when I pressed that letter on the keyboard, but also (when I held the key down for a moment) the letter A with an umlaut or an accent, as well as some other options. There are similar possibilities with the other vowels, as well as with some consonants, e.g., S > ß. Now, my keyboard no longer writes (in the Mail app, for example) when I press the key for a moment to call up the options for that key.
I noticed that this happened after I made updates of iOS to all of my Mac devices, though I am not certain this is related. This Mac is using El Capitan 10.11.6.
I live in Germany, so having this functionality to swap between languages is a big deal to me.
Can anybody shed some light on this?
Best regards, and thanks in advance for any help.

Jeff,
Have you attempted doing a SMC reset? If not and you don't know how please look over iMac SMC and PRAM reset and reset the SMC 2-3 times and then retest.
