Q: Apple Lossless Format Question For iTunes 12.5.1.21

I have recently repaired my Windows 10 64 bit OS and reinstalled iTunes (current version 12.5.1.21).  I notice that you are no longer able to highlight a song file and store it as an Apple Lossless file when right clicking in iTunes.  I did find a choice in the "Settings" menu that allows you to import songs in that format, but when I select "Add File to Library" in the menu the song file isn't stored/converted to the Apple Lossless Format and remains in its original MP3 format.

Is there some way around this issue and why is it no longer available as an option when working with the individual file as it used to?  Not sure what the thinking was behind this.

The Add File/Folder to Library functions have never included any format conversions, the media files will always be added to your library in their original format.  If you've select Apple Lossless as your default format for CD imports, there will be a menu option (File > Convert > Create Apple Lossless version) that you can use to perform such a conversion after import (you'll end up with additional items in your library, the original files and the converted ones).  However, if your original files are mp3s there is absolutely no point in converting them to Apple Lossless - you'll just get larger files with no improvement in audio quality.
