Sep 26, 2016 12:41 PM in response to Senfty88by ottminor123,I got the same issue after upgrading to iOS 10.0.2 and can't figure out what is causing this and then went back to 9.3.5 through Windows 10 pc using iTunes. I do have 9.3.5 installed as iOS in my phone but still having same issue 'touch id failed'. My handset is iPhone 6 with 9.3.5 version ....Any solution to that ?

Sep 26, 2016 2:11 PM in response to Senfty88by allenb1952,I had the same problem also. I called Apple and they ran a scan on my iPhone 6s plus and the touch id failed. They swapped it out for a new phone.

Sep 26, 2016 2:25 PM in response to Senfty88by gail from maine,If you have never taken it to an outside vendor to repair, then I would highly recommend that you take a trip to the Apple Store to see what they can do for you.
Best of luck,
