Q: Restart to another drive

I have Snow Leopard ( the minimum OS ) installed on an external USB drive.  My main hard drive is an a late 21.5 model  2009 iMac running Maverick ( OS 10.9.5).  Then on a external USB I have Yosemite 10.10.5.

When I want to restart from Snow Leopard to Yosemite for some strange reason the Yosemite drive does not show up but Mavericks drive does show.   Then to get to Yosemite i have to restart from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and then restart to Yosemite.

Any ideas how to resolve this most annoying glitch ?

Yosemite introduced Core Storage; volumes which use it won't appear in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences on 10.6.8 or earlier. Restart with the Option key held down to get to Yosemite directly.

Many thanks to you Niel for taking the time to read my question/problem and for providing me with a straight up answer.   I am some what embarrassed for not knowing the solution.  However, at the same time i was really not aware or fully understood that Yosemite introduced Core Storage.  Will still have to research what Core Storage means. Thanks again.
