Q: evite and firewall

I am not able to receive Evites.  When looking for solutions, Evites mentions that I have to adjust my settings on the firewall.  Does anybody know how to do this and is it safe?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Do you have an active firewall? Have you installed any commercial software that includes internet protection, etc.? If you have the latter, then uninstall the software completely.

Thanks for the response.  My Firewall is "on" if that is what you mean.  I have no idea if I installed software that includes internet protection.  How do I find that out.

Open Security & Privacy preferences. Click on the Firewall button, then turn off the firewall. See if that helps.

If you don't recall installing third-party anti-malware or similar protection software, then you don't have it.

Thanks.  What are the consequences of me turning off the firewall otherwise?

It depends on why you had it turned on. A firewall's main use is to prevent hackers from gaining access to your computer because you have information of significant value and importance that others will attempt to steal it. It won't protect you from viruses and other malware. A firewall is usually necessary if your computer is acting as a server to many other users with highly sensitive information.

If you opted to encrypt your drive when installing OS X, then there really is not much need for the firewall except as an added bit of security related to security risks as I mentioned above. If you have a hardware router using NAT, then that pretty much precludes the need for an additional firewall.
