Sorry. What does this have to do with iOS?

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there still using Yosemite and Mountain Lion. What's the point of your question?

I was asking because if those folks are still using their MacBook pros without getting the next iOS update then that to me means that the old IOS is still a good they don't have to updated their older MacBooks just because a new IOS came out.

Lots of people are still using older versions of OS X. I mainly use Mavericks, sometimes Snow Leopard, because I need to keep using certain applications, and the user interface is better. I have installed Yosemite and El Capitan, but have not done anything more with them thsn try them out.

FYI iOS is the operating system for iPhones, iPads, and iPods, not for Macs.

I'm sorry i meant OS, i have a 2009 MacBook Pro, it was built in Mid 2009, Apple has come out and said that your computer has to be built in late 2009 in order to receive OS Sierra.

So I'm thinking I need to buy a new computer because I cannot get the latest OS.

I just spent over $400 to replace the hard drive and the battery, so that's why I'm concerned about the old OS El Capitan.

If Apple continues operating the way they have been, it will probably continue security updates for El Capitan through 2018. If you want to install El Capitan, you can use the link below.

    El Capitan

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

Nothing in Sierra seems particularly compelling to me. If you have invested in a new battery and HD, just stick with El Cap as long as you can.
