That, combined with the fact that Japanese carriers typically do not unlock phones, suggests to me that it would not be wise to purchase an iPhone in Japan in your case. You should just buy one in the country you intend to use it in.

I'm pretty sure those will be unlocked / simfree - but will ask them in the store anyway. If you buy one via a Japanese carrier you can unlock them after 6 months for a fee of 3000 yen I believe.
