Sep 27, 2016 6:14 AM in response to jdp311by jdp311,Hi
I am not being lazy here
All I have on my screen is the OS X Utilities, which if I click Reinstall OS X, it defaults immediately to go for Yosemite.
I am 100 % unfamiliar with the software, though not a novice computer user.
I just dont seem to be able to send this off to look for anything other than Yosemite (result you know from my 1st Post.
If I could just get started, I m sure I can work it out
ALSO, I have 2 Disks
OS X Base System 1.33GB with 33 Mb Free
2. A New Disk, 1 TB
I am guessing I should install on the 1 TB Disk ????
I really appreciate the Help

Sep 28, 2016 6:54 AM in response to Mike Sombrioby jdp311,Hi
I am going round in circles here
Restore From Time Machine Backup - No Backups
Reinstall OS X - Goes to Yosemite and then says not available
Select Startup Disk - popup box is EMPTY
How on earth do I get an Operating System on this Machine
I would give more information if I could, or knew what is relevant
Surely there is a way to get this thing working
Desperate

Sep 28, 2016 4:02 PM in response to jdp311by Mike Sombrio,It's important to know exactly which iMac? Since it's not running if you don't know for sure you may need to enter the machines serial number at this link to find out http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
Yosemite is only available to Macs that orginally shipped with it.

Sep 29, 2016 7:07 PM in response to jdp311by Mike Sombrio,Something is missing here. You said earlier that you have a new 1TB disk? This new disk replaced your internal hard drive? A new hard drive would be blank, no OS, how are you starting your iMac at all? Did this new disk previously have Yosemite installed?

Sep 30, 2016 5:04 AM in response to Mike Sombrioby jdp311,Hi
HDDs
When I follow the route of reinstalling Yosemite, it 1st asks which Disk
I have 2 Options
1. New 1TB 999Gb Total
2. Recovery HD 650Mb Total
Selecting New Hdd results in Log in and Not Available
Selecting Recovery says The Disk is Locked
As to the New Disk, I do not know what was on it

Sep 30, 2016 5:11 AM in response to jdp311by Mike Sombrio,If the hard disk has a recovery partition it is not new. You should get your Snow Leopard install disc and format and repartition the hard disk and first install Snow Leopard. If somehow you don't have a Snow Leopard disc buy one http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard?fnode=bd9df ffc279ae7442f708bc58e670bfa2fb10c38ba693… Then update to 10.6.8 using Download Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update v.1.1 to gain access to the Mac App Store where you can upgrade to either Yosemite, which should be in your purchases or to El Capitan.
