You should copy the installer to your internal drive and run it from there.

Sep 27, 2016 8:41 AM in response to Prince1018by FatMac>MacPro,Since you've already downloaded the installer, "Install macOS Sierra" should be in your Applications folder. Assuming your external is bootable, boot it and run the installer with your internal as the target.
