Sep 27, 2016 8:43 AM in response to Owlisonby lllaass,One is that to upgrade to Sierra overt actions has to be taken by the users:
- The user has to download the upgrade file- The user has to then click on the upgrade file and direct what disk is to be upgraded
- Has to agree with the terms of use
Then after the Mac restarts the Apple ID and PW has to be entered for iCloud and other things.
What do you mean by "connected to my other devices"?
What other devices?
What OS and version on tjhose other devices?
What OSX version did you upgrade from?

Sep 27, 2016 9:23 AM in response to lllaassby Owlison,There are still a few notes on my iPhone, and IPAD, but the majority of my notes were on this mac. and Yes, I let it restart because it said to finish upgrade, I had to restart. I did NOT select a folder for the upgrade on the OS - but my computer is set to to auto upgrades when new OS come out.
The main issue is, my notes are gone. I have found folders in library/content/notes - but I have no idea how to restore these notes and there were some critical things in there. Any suggestions?

Sep 27, 2016 9:30 AM in response to Owlisonby lllaass,The settings in the Mac App Store Preferences are for OS and app upDATES. Sierra is an upGRADE and those are have to be downloaded from the Mac App Store and manually installed. They do not get automatically installed like upDATES can.
You did not answer these questions from my previous reply:
What OS and version on those other devices?
What OSX version did you upgrade from?
I ask since in previous iOS and Mac OS updates Maybe Yosemite and iOS 8 or 9, one had to update all devices to those versions in order for notes to sync and be viewed on all devices

Sep 27, 2016 2:41 PM in response to lllaassby Owlison,I tried - and it is telling me there is an issue with my external back-up. I cannot tell you how frustrated I am - I did that back-up on a regular basis assuming for things like this I was protected, and now it won't let me access it. And I purchased a 2 TB so there would always be plenty of room. Bought the same thing for my husbands Mac - it is working fine. NO clue what the issue is on mine.

Sep 27, 2016 3:08 PM in response to lllaassby Owlison,I plugged the external device into a USB port, and it said it was unreadable. If I reformat the entire thing, everything will be lost. I just haven't had the time to mess with it, just death with the death of a parent, then pneumonia/virus - the one that killed her. So have been ill. Unfortunately, the things I would have normally done to protect my information wasn't done due to these big events. TMI I know, but that is part of the issue. So it is just a glitch in life and my computer at the same time.
I did find the majority of my Notes on my iPad, so I have typed them into the iCloud Notes section, but I know I'm missing some. However, the 2 critical things that could not be replaced I found there, and sent them to my email, then copied/paste.
However, I would still like to know how to recover these notes. I've tried Time Machine, I've tried going to library/content/notes/.......
But Everything I have tried has been unsuccessful.

Sep 27, 2016 5:12 PM in response to lllaassby Owlison,And i don't have the exact msg - maybe we should just forget this - maybe it is too hard to recover Notes once the system deletes them. Just ridiculous that this can happen. Thank you for your efforts. Have a good evening.

Sep 28, 2016 1:24 AM in response to Owlisonby lllaass,You can try a disk recovery app to see if y can get anything from the backup:
Top Ten Mac File Recovery Review 2015

you may be able to download a demo of Data Rescue 4, and the demo will give you an idea of what it can recover. If it looks promising, you then can buy the software.
