Q: iMac taking too long to shut down.

I have just upgraded my 2011 iMac to Sierra. The problem I am having, and I don't know if it is a problem, is that my Mac takes a least 2 - 3 mins to shut down. Might be longer.  This didn't happen with the previous version of OSX.  I have reset the SMC and the PRAM. Don't know if anyone could tell me if there is anything wrong.

Regards

Brian

    Hey there, Amidabrian!

I see that your iMac is taking longer to shut down after upgrading to macOS Sierra. I'll be glad to provide some great ways to make sure your iMac shuts down more efficiently.

Force an app to close on your Mac -- One great way to speed things up is to close all of your open applications before shutting down your iMac.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up -- Even though your iMac starts up, safe mode makes sure it starts up correctly.

    What is safe mode?

Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. Starting your Mac in safe mode does the following:

Verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed
    Loads only required kernel extensions
Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
    Disables user-installed fonts
Deletes font caches, Kernel cache and other system cache files

Together, these changes can help resolve or isolate issues related to your startup disk.

macOS Sierra: If you think you have incompatible login items -- Checking your iMac's login items can also help. Some of them may be running in the background and slowing the shutdown time.

This should get your iMac and Sierra working smoothly together. Have a great day!
