    The primary issue I see is your system has Avast Anti Virus software installed. OS X is EXTREMELY secure and does not need ANY AV, cleaning, or other types of maintenance apps. In many situations installing such software tends to create more problems then they solve. My suggestion is to locate the developers instructions and uninstall Avast. After you have done so, please restart the computer in Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key on restart until it fully starts up), this restart will clear some caches. Then restart normally and test.

    Please read If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support.

    To uninstall "Avast" use its uninstaller, which will remove it completely. Use no other utility, technique, or procedure to uninstall it.

    Uninstall "Bitdefender" also. Refer to its instructions.

    Actually I only installed Avast after getting tired of seeing the spinning ball of doom for months and then the first reinstall from backup.   But I have now removed both Avast and Bitdefender;

    Thanks

    To be sure they are totally gone, re-run an EtreCheck report and look for ANY evidence of either app in the report.

    BTW, is the computer working better after uninstalling them?

    This concerns me:

    Normally Time Machine needs no help. Having two programs that can change the way the system works may be an invitation for stability issues.

    I would also test with all external USB devices unplugged except keyboard and mouse (if yours are wired). Sometime a wonky USB device can create issues.

    Part of the issue may have been having too many pages open in safari because after I had to do the last reinstall (2 days ago) it no longer had remembered the pages I previously had open, and I have not had an issue yet, but have not had much time on the computer since.  So can't say that the uninstalls made a difference or not.

    The only reason that I ran the TMS was I didn't like how often TM was backing up, & in running it this way for the last couple years hasn't seemed to have any issues

    froggie123,

    Your report indicates the computer is starved for RAM. This can be caused by many things however in order to manage you RAM useage, Apple has included the Activity Monitor app. I would begin learning how to use AM and see what is using up all of the RAM.

    I looked all through Safari, and checked for other extensions that might be running but had none, and never found anything about search Genius . . .

    My guess is that the RAM has been the issue with my having too many pages left open!  I would leave it running and sometimes it would reboot by itself and sometimes mention something about asleep or wakeup kernel . . .   I really didn't pay enough attention to it.  But so far by keeping few windows open and few programs running I have not seen any issues.

    I appreciate the help!
