Q: Restoring iTunes backup from iPhone 7/6s Plus to iPhone 7/6

Wondering if someone share the experience on switching the iTunes backup between 5.5 inch to 4.7 sized devices and vice versa. So far I am used to 4.7 inch screen and interested in trying Plus. In case I wanted to go back to smaller phones in future is there any problem in using 5.5 inch backup on 4.7 inch?

    Hi there, rg58272!

Thank you for reaching out via the Apple Support Communities. After reading your post, I am understanding that you have some questions regarding backing up your iPhone, and then using that backup on a different iPhone. I'd be happy to help!

The physical size of your iPhone, whether it's an iPhone 7 or an iPhone 7 Plus, won't affect your ability to use your backup. What will affect it, though, is the storage size of your iPhone. For example, if you have a 128GB iPhone and have used 120GBs, that backup can only be restored to an iPhone that has a 128GB or larger storage capacity; you could not restore it to a 32GB iPhone.

When it comes time for you to back up your iPhone, you can use the following article.

    Happy testing!

Thank You, norm123. Are you saying I can use iPhone 7 Plus backup and restore that using iTunes on iPhone 7 as long as the storage conditions & iOS versions met?

    Yes, you are absolutely correct!

Your storage size just needs to be the same or greater on the phone you're going to. The iOS version has to at least be the same version as the one that created the iTunes backup, if not a newer version. You can go from an iPhone 7 Plus to an iPhone 7 using your iTunes backup without issue otherwise.

    Cheers!
