Q: Migration process now broken

Hi,

I'm migrating a server running 10.8.5 to a new Mac running 10.11.6. On Monday this was fine - I took a Time Machine backup, migrated it to the new Mac, downloaded Server, ran it, and everything worked just like that.

Now on Thursday, since Server got updated to 5.2, after migrating and downloading Server and running it, it refuses to update saying I need to run an older version of Server or OS X to do the migration. I have no way of getting the version that was downloadable on Monday though, not that I can see.

Any advice?

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Solved by Apple support - get a Mac running 10.11 earlier than 10.11.6, and the App store will download an older version of Server. That can be copied across, and the migration done with that version.

    Phew.

This is not helpful at all, and I don't consider it solved at all.

How can finding another computer which per chance runs a lower version of the OS be even remotely considered a solution? This machine will most likely be configured with another AppleID. The Server.app will most likely not run on  the machine with the original problem.

I am the administrator of a small graphics company which now, after an upgrade to El Capitan, has to copy their files to a USB stick and literally carry them to their work place.

Any other solution would be highly appreciated.

When I called in I think there was some suggestion they'd raise it with the App Store team to get it available another way, but the above happened to be doable for me and was faster than waiting for that to happen. If you haven't already you'll probably want to chase it up and see if they can make it available as a download for you.

If you do find a machine that's configured with another AppleID you should be able to create a different user account and sign in with an appropriate ID with that account?

The entire collection of operating systems should be listed in the App Store under the Purchased tab by the date it was published. Download the OS X version of your choice.  Using Terminal, create an Install Drive. Restart your computer in Recovery mode. Using Disk Utility, partition a small portion of your hard drive and re-install the previous version of Mac OS X of your choice. Restart your computer and log into the new partition using admin credentials. Re-create the environment settings, backup and migrate.

Let me know if this was helpful to you.

I believe this only works for major releases, not minor releases. And 10.10 was too old to install on this particular Mac, so this method would not have worked.

I am in agreement here - the supposed solutions are not helping me.  Maybe there is something that was unclear about the explanation, but I can't make any of this work.  I fired up my old MacBook running 10.11.1 and downloaded the Server app there.  As expected, moving it to the iMac running 10.12 doesn't work.  I tried running it on the MacBook to administer the server on the iMac, but it won't connect.

How do I just remove all traces of Server so that I can start over again?
