Q: iphone 7: itunes sync not working

Error message: iTunes could not connect to the iPhone “iPhone” because an invalid response was received from the device.

Hi,

I am trying to install the backup of my previous phone on my new iphone but keep having the same error message. Tried rebooting and different cables but it doesn't work. I have itunes 11.4 on IOS 10.6.8. I also tried with Maverik and same result...

Thanks in advance for your help.

You need iTunes 12.5, which requires OS X 10.9.5 or higher.

Tried from Maveric and iTunes 12.5 but no full sync possible. I checked updates of IOS and iTunes and my Mac says no updates available...

Hopefully Apple will release a new Mac with serious improvements soon otherwise we will turn to Samsung and back to Windows!

What do you mean "no full sync possible"? You're giving us absolutely no usable information when it comes to troubleshooting.

We can't help you if you won't at least attempt to help yourself a little bit. If your idea of troubleshooting a problem is waiting for a fix for a problem that's unique to you to magically appear, you're going to have a hard time of it, no matter what platform you're using.

    Hi KiltedTim,

thank you very much for you support and trying to help me. to explain:

tried to backup on a Macbook Pro with Maverick and itunes 12.5 but only a couple of apps where synchronized. No content, no photos, no apps, so I assume the sync did not work at all...to resume the issue: on two mac book pro one with IOS 10.6.8 and itunes 11.4 and another with maverick and itunes 12.5 the sync did not function.

Thanks you very much for your support.

Photos don't transfer as part of the sync process with iTunes. You need to open the Photos App on your Mac and import the photos that way.

As for apps, you can no longer transfer apps from the phone to iTunes, only the other way round. This is due to a newish feature called App Thinning. When you download an app to iTunes on your computer, you get the entire app, suitable for all iOS devices it is compatible with.

When you download an app directly to your device, you get a 'thinned' version of the app that leaves out pieces that are unnecessary on your device to save on bandwidth and storage space.

    thank you for your help.

What I don't understand is why apps saved on itunes do not get transferred on my phone. And what about contacts, messages and music?

only a couple of apps were transferred while doing the sync from Maverik and the only option to use my phone was to set it as a new iphone...

    thanks!

Me too. I'm told by the Apple representative that it's because older version of iTunes cannot sync with devices running iOS 10. In my case, my mac cannot update to the latest version of iTunes, thus creating this invalid response ridiculosity. I honestly think this is Apple's fault. This is a shady and greedy move. If they had informed the end users before the phone gets updated to iOS 10 that this is a situation that will arise for users with slightly older versions of iTunes, I'm sure this issue could've been easily dodged. Instead, they let this happen and then force their product users to purchase another newer but not necessarily better or more innovative product from them. Greedy.

glad to hear it is not an issue due to the device purchaised and agree that they should have informed customers about this issue because one of the main reasons I purchase iPhone instead of another brand is the sync with my libraries (content, contacts, photos, music) if this is no more the case I may return the phone and go see the competitors given the very low improvements from iphone 6 to iphone 7.

For the sake of clarity the sync is impossible from Maverik and itunes 12.5.
