Q: Airport Time Capsule as Wired HDD/Backup with Time Machine

Hi, Guys!

I have an Airport Time Capsule (3TB) but I can't use it as a wireless network.  I need to set it up as a wired hard disk so I can do a backup with Time Capsule.  The reason why it can't be wireless is because I'm backing up work documents and they won't allow wireless backups.

I think I was able to get the airport connected.  I set it up and disabled the wireless internet.  I set up the network as bridged and manually input the DNS Server, IPV4 Address, Router Address.  It's currently showing a green light.  However, when I try to setup the Time Machine, I just can not find the airport server.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks!

Are we talking about it being plugged into a Mac?

Can the airport utility see the TC?

Are you getting internet by wireless or ethernet?

If you have it setup in the main network in bridge it should just work. However to use it standalone is much tricker and you need to do the setup carefully so that you do not have competing DNS and gateways.

I have some info here on the setup for using both wireless for internet and ethernet direct to the TC to do just backups.

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6486672

If you are doing both through the TC give me some more info.. a few screenshots of the setup from Airport utility will help no end.

    Let me note one thing..

A USB drive (even USB2) will be faster and much more reliable than using Network. Time Machine in particular is much better on a local drive which the computer controls. (hard disk in TC is controlled by the TC firmware).

In the end the cost of a 3TB TC will buy you 4TB or even 6TB USB drive. Or multiple 2TB self powered 2.5" drives. And if the computer has USB3 it can be 5x faster than backup to TC over gigabit.

Thank you for your prompt response!

I have the mac pro connected to the network on Ethernet 2.  Ethernet 1 goes to the TC.

I'm not really that knowledgeable in networking, I'm just trying to help my boss backup his work documents. Airport Utility does see TC (with a green light).  The problem is when I try to backup from TM... It won't recognize the TC.

I shall try that link you gave me and report back with any updates

Tell me how you go.. it should work ok if you are using the IP address ranges correctly.

I Configured the TC manually... I put the same dns server and up address as "Ethernet 2" (wired to the network)

that's the only way I can make the light go green.

if you need any other info please let me know, Id love to both get this over with quickly and learn how to do it properly lol

Post a screenshot from the Network on the computer.

I need to see how you setup both ethernet.. and what IP they are running.

There is no info here that is going to help the hackers.. so you can post it.. I may need more details if I don't see enough. Please don't black out stuff.. I need it all.

Post your setup of the TC from airport utility as well.. That also helps.

Hmmm.. you have a private IP not public IP on the internet.. I am guessing the building has ethernet distributed for users internet.. but you are already behind a router.

Your current setup will never work.

So I am going to suggest two methods.

    1. The TC as you have it now must be setup as router.

And you must move the LAN side to a different IP range.. ie 192.168. You do this under Network Options.

The Network tab should be set to DHCP and NAT.

Your internet tab is probably better set back to DHCP.

This way you will get a double NAT error but that is not relevant.. The ISP is not handing you a public address.. so it won't work like standard setup.

    2. The alternative is to separate the Internet from the TC.

Plug the main internet connection directly to the computer. To keep it easy lets say Ethernet 1. Everything on ethernet 1 should be set to auto/dhcp except IPv6 which you set to link local only.

Reset the TC to factory and start over. You must plug it into Ethernet 2.

Leave the wireless on during the setup.. that will help.

You should leave it in router mode (after a reset the TC will be in router mode by default).

You then can manually configure it.

Set the DHCP to 192.168. instead of 10.0 in network options tab.

So the LAN of the TC will take 192.168.1.1 address.

Ignore all the lack of WAN issues.. that won't matter.

Set the computer to static IP 192.168.1.10

    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Gateway however must match Ethernet 1 and should be

    10.10.34.189

For DNS use the same values you have now if they work.. it actually looks wrong to me.

10.18.10.4 is in the wrong address range.

You might find it better to leave it blank and see what happens. Otherwise use the google public.. 8.8.8.8

Anyway I might need a bit more info about the ISP .. and if they have given any info about the setup required.
