Q: Messages app on iOS 10.0.2 issue (heavy battery drain !)

Hi,

I've noticed a big issue with Messages app on iOS 10.0.2. Since update, this app is heavily draining battery...

for english people (10 mn on screen, 5,5h (?????) background).

I don't use Message as much !

Is there a workaround to fix this issue ? I've lost 30% of battery in 2 hours on a iPhone 7+

    Hi pierrezep,

Thanks for updating to iOS 10.02! I understand that after the update your Messages app is using a very high amount of your battery. You can try to force quit the Messages app then relaunch.  Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If this does not resolve the issue, try the tips in this link for maximizing your iPhone's battery life. Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan

This should resolve your battery drain issues for sure! Thanks for using Apple Support Communities to post your question.

    Have a great day.

To be honest its very nice that you point out the "Maximising Battery Life" link. However, as I am experiencing the messages App depleting my battery life rapidly I have checked out a lot of these guides and they are guides for normal running systems.

Messages draining the battery is a defect and this is not to do with maximising battery life on a system running correctly, what we require is a fix if it has been found. So turning off my location services and reducing my brightness will not fix the fact that messages is draining my battery....for sure!!!

Apologies for sounding harsh, but its rather an annoying fault on a usually marvellous piece of equipment.

IF you go into Preferences -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services you will see a culprit (if you have the Status Bar option enabled). The Compas calibration and Location based alerts constantly activate and deactivate. This

is on a brand new iPhone 7 that got great battery life on 10.0.1 - I usually got by for 48 hours between charges with moderate use (a few hrs web surfing and using 3rd party messaging). Even with the above workarounds i am watching my battery meter drop 3 percent as i type this. I did an OTA ipdate. I will be heading home to downgrade ipsw. I just lost confidence in Apples software QA. Apple staff who may read this, if you are going to nag us with daily OTA updates can you please do more extensive testing before pushing out minor point releases? This one really put a huge hole in my battery life and confidence in Apple quality.

Results - Using latest iTunes I did a "Backup" and "Restore Backup". The battery drain and accompanying Loc.Svcs (Compass Calibration excessive running) vanish for about 10 mins after the Restore (on same 10.0.2).

So then I used "Restore iPhone" with shift-click (windows) and restored 10.0.1.  Its been 12hrs and no excessive Location Service activity and battery percentage has gone back to excellent.  I am not sure the root cause and don't have  another four hours to waste.

it will be a long time before I trust Apple iOS updates and will leave it in. 10.0.1..

A follow up to my other post - I am now back on iOS 10.0.1 and I have an iPhone 7... My device is named "WeziPhone5s" (I never bothered changing the device name after upgrading iPhone recently . Have a look at the following screenshot I just took on my iPhone 7:

    IMG_1798.PNG

THat screenshot was taken in Settings - Privacy - Location Services - Share my location. Notice how there are two identically named devices and "This device is not selected". This seems like another bug.. Judging from Pierre's problem and my observation of excessive Location Services activity, it seems there may be an iOS 10 bug related to Messages and Share My Location.. I am guessing the problem gets more severe on 10.0.2.  A possible workaround is to disable "Share My Location" in Settings - Privacy - Location Services... Pierre (and others here reporting) can you please post a reply here informing if you have duplicate device names in this setting (Share My Location)?  If so we might be getting close to identifying the cause of the battery drain problem...
