Q: can't select disk to install Sierra update (Macbook Pro 13 inch, late 2011)

I downloaded the Sierra update and proceeded with the installation. However, I noticed that even though I could move the pointer around, I couldn't make selections on tapping the trackpad. I managed get past the first few steps by making use of the 'Tab' key (keyboard) to make selections and the 'spacebar' to make confirmations. However, on reaching the "select the disk where you want to install macOS" step, the "Tab" & "Spacebar" technique stopped working. Now I'm stuck here. Can someone please tell me how to get past this??

Sounds like it's a trackpad problem? Or anyways a trackpad issue connected with installing Sierra? I would take the MBP to a Genius Bar...

The problem is not just related to the Sierra update. The same problem occurs in the log in page (the one we get when we start up the mac). Before the Sierra update, months back, I noticed that it also happens in OS X Utilities. Plus, I'm in a place where Genius Bar is a thing of fantasy

Maybe it's a hardware issue with the trackpad itself.

The only thing that comes to mind (being no expert at all) is Genius Bar.

That's why I've suggested it... There's no  Store there that you can take your computer to?

Nope. There's not even an Apple store here..just authorized dealers. However, yesterday I managed to get past the said step by using an external mouse. That did solve the problem but the fact remains that the trackpad is still faulty.
