Q: Problems with macOS Sierra?  This fix may help you.

Hi, everyone.

I wanted to post a solution I developed because of some erratic behavior I was experiencing with macOS Sierra (no sound, slow boot, sluggish performance, ...etc).  This fixed all my issues:

  1. After upgrading to Sierra, reboot your system and reset NVRAM and SMC
    1. Reset NVRAM - How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
    2. Reset SMC - Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Boot normally
  3. Restart
  4. Boot to Recovery Mode (Command + R) - About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
    1. Launch Disk Utilty
      1. Click on your Physical Disk (should be the one above Macintosh HD)...click First Aid and allow it to Run
      2. Click on Macintosh HD...click First Aid and allow it to Run
      3. Exit Disk Utility
    2. Launch Reinstall macOS and complete the reinstall.  Be very patient.
  5. Once the reinstall process is complete:
    1. Restart
    2. Reset NVRAM again - How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
    3. Reset SMC again - Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
    4. Boot normally
    5. Restart
    6. Boot to Recovery Mode again (Command + R) - About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
      1. Launch Disk Utility
        1. Click on your Physical Disk (should be the one above Macintosh HD)...click First Aid and allow it to Run
        2. Click on Macintosh HD...click First Aid and allow it to Run
        3. Exit Disk Utility
      2. Exit Recovery Mode and boot normally

Happy to help with this,

I'd done Disk First Aid, and tonight tried to do a Reinstall in Recovery Mode. I went into Recovery Mode, but nothing happened at all after I told it to reinstall Sierra (actually it said it would check whether I was eligible, then I hit Continue and nothing happened for over an hour when I quit).  I also downloaded Sierra from the App Store, reinstalled, and have exactly the same issues. But I'll happily try again in a day or two following your specific guidelines, and it would be nice if it worked.  (I didn't have any of your issues. Mine were Mail having issues re the attachment window (either opens and closes fast, or opens but not fully, so I can't get to the top), network going offline after I awake the computer from sleep, sleep sometimes takes three tries since the first time I try to sleep it, it wakes right back up.  But I'll give it a try, and thanks to both you and Kappy for the info.

I have a problem with my fan coming on way too much and the CPU going into overtime. Will this sequence fix this problem?

With previous versions of the op system, the fan coming on right away and running like crazy was always solved by resetting the SMC, in case that helps.

    Thanks for the reply.

Resetting the SMC was one of the first things I tried, but it didn't stop the fan issue. It was mainly happening while using Safari. I checked on another thread and found that uninstalling IBM's Trusteer Rapport Security app should help and low and behold, it did — not ideal since I use my computer for online banking, but I'll hold off until they have updated the app.

I think I've been lucky compaired to some of the other reports coming in regarding Sierra. I think it's a great OS (now my fan is back to normal)!

    Good Luck, Larry.

Go through the whole procedure and allow plenty of time.  You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

Please reply back with the outcome.  There are a lot of smart people watching this post.

TThank you for the prompt response. I tried following all the instructions from your response and the problem still persists. Immediately after sending sound to the Bluetooth speaker the video stops mirroring to the Apple TV. Do you have any other suggestions? Your help is greatly appreciated

    Hi, Hammy.

If you were able to successfully perform all the steps in the Sierra fix procedure at the very top of this post, the next logical thing would be to look at the Apple TV.

Make sure the Apple TV is up to date with the latest OS, then reset the Apple TV (Settings...General...Reset...Reset all settings).  This is not a bad thing to do after a major OS update anyway.

If this doesn't work, contact Apple support.  You'll have already done the basic steps (and then some) that they would have you do before submitting a bug report.

I hope this helps.  Please let us know the outcome.

    Hi BrianSel,

I had the same problems with my MacBook Pro after installing Sierra. Yesterday I did your solution but it did not solve my problem with the speakers not being even as an option in sound settings. Only Digital Output and Apple TV.

Enclosed is report from the Ethercheck that I have run now. Please, do you have any idea how to solve the speakers problem?

I think these are great tips. I would also add that clearing out the user cache before installing (or after) is a good way to help clean house. I have done this with all my macs before installing and have had zero issues. This is the first time I can say that a first release of a MacOS (OS X) has not had major issues for me. It's been clean, fast and efficient.

The only real problem I have had, and I don't attribute it to the OS, is Virtualbox when running a VM will sometimes cause the user to go back to the login screen. When you log back in you cannot switch to the VM even though it is running.

To delete the user cache go to folder ~/Library/caches/ and put the files in the trash. Reboot and then empty the trash.

    Hi, brycesteiner.

    Thank you.

Yeah...there's going to be a bit of weirdness with things until apps are 100% compatible with Sierra...along with squishing OS bugs.

Clearing the user cache...that is a really good suggestion!!  There is a freebie product I use called Onyx.  Clearing the user cache is just one of the wonderful things this application does to help things run smoothly.  A version for Sierra is coming real soon.

Thank you for your kind words and your contribution!

    Comments on your Etrecheck report...

18 processes killed due to insufficient RAM

4 GB RAM Upgradeable - [Instructions]

    BANK 0/DIMM0

    2 GB DDR3 1600 MHz ok

    BANK 1/DIMM0

    2 GB DDR3 1600 MHz ok

    Flash Player: 22.0.0.209 - SDK 10.9 (2016-07-28) Outdated! Update

I highly suggest you upgrade your RAM to 8GB.

    Open System Profiler > Hardware

Copy the Serial number and model identifier

    RAM.png

Under Memory in System Profiler, you'll see how many slots and what is installed. You need matching pairs.

Next using the Identifier and with the knowledge of your exact model and how much RAM you can install, go to this site: (There are several sources for memory. This one has good prices and has the video showing how to install)

    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/

You can find install videos here:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/

Remove Flash. If you don't have Flash installed, most video will play in HTML5.  If you need to play a video that requires Flash, you can play in Google Chrome that includes a built in Flash player.

To uninstall Flash, go to Applications/Utilities

Run Adobe Flash Player Manager > Uninstall

In Safari 10, included in macOS Sierra, Apple disables common plug-ins like Adobe Flash, Java, Silverlight, and QuickTime by default in an effort to focus on HTML5 content and improve the overall web browsing experience.

... As the year goes on, Firefox will clamp down on more kinds of Flash content, and next year it will require that users approve playing any Flash content with a click. These moves are part of a trend by all browser makers to deprecate Flash, which is buggy and remains full of security holes."

    Hi, Orion.

    Thank you for stopping by!

Question:  Was everything OK prior to the upgrade?

I would say that if you've gone through the whole procedure that I posted, you may have something else going on.

Have you seen this? Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs - Apple Support

You may also want to start a new thread in the discussions.  There are a LOT of smart people watching and eager to assist.

    Hope this helps,
