Don’t delete it there.
Delete iTunes backups in iTunes prefs > Devices.
You should always maintain ~10%-15% free space on you boot drive.
If not, you need to delete/move stuff to another drive.

Your response says that 50GB available space is too much and I should pad my drive with garbage files, yes?

No.
You should keep a minimum of 10% free space. This give the OS room to move things around.

The 50 GB meets that requirement.
iTunes 12.5.1 will not backup my iPod Touch with error message "iTunes could not back up the iPod because there is not enough free space on this computer to save the backup."
And yet a iTunes 12.4.3.1 will without error
