Q: ipv6 stopped working with Sierra

Hey all, have a late 2012 27" iMac that I just erased and did a clean install of MacOS Sierra. So far only one issue to note, my iMac will no longer pull an ipv6 address. The other Mac's in my home all do, along with our iOS devices. And this iMac worked fine with El Cap. I am wondering if there is a setting somewhere I missed to enable ipv6? It doesn't work on either the ethernet or wifi connection.

Any help is much appreachated thanks!

    Hi waxhawsam,

Thanks for posting your question in the Apple Support Community! I understand you're having trouble getting your iMac to work with an IPv6 address. I'm happy to offer some direction.

IPv6 should be automatically configured by default, however you can take a look at the following article for more information:

    macOS Sierra: Use IPv6

    Take care.

Thanks this is exactly how my iMac is setup, and my other Macs for that matter, Auto via DHCP for IPv4 and Auto for IPv6, still nothing. There has to be something wrong specifically with this machine.

Thanks for the update, waxhawsam! There are 2 additional steps you may want to try to see if we can isolate the issue further. The first step I recommend is to try starting up in safe mode. This will clear some caches and prevent some software from starting up that could be causing the issue you're experiencing.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode

If an issue doesn't happen when your Mac is started in safe mode, try restarting again without pressing any keys at startup. If the issue appears to be resolved when you start up normally, it was possibly caused by a cache or a directory issue with your startup disk that safe mode fixed.
If you restart your Mac normally and an issue comes back when you reach your desktop, try disabling any login items that automatically open when you log in.

You can also try setting up a test user account on your Mac to test this out. This can help determine if there is a user specific file that is causing the issue.

    Cheers!

Thanks, tried both, no difference. My guess is there should be some command line tools I can use to see if it's requesting an address and not getting one.

Since you aren't seeing any change, you may want to try reinstalling OS X. This shouldn't erase any of your personal data, however you should make sure you have a backup of your Mac just to ensure your data is safe. You can find the information you'll need in the articles below.
