Q: macOS Sierra is a real dog - too many problems.

Too many unresponsive apps happening, and too many anomalies.

Too many broken parts now.

What a dog. I wish I had never upgraded.

Mac Mini. 2012. July model.

16 GB RAM

2 TB HDD space.

2 TB Backup space

Post upgrade from El Capitan

1. Some usernames and passwords lost

2. All printers and scanners lost from System Preferences -> Printers & Scanners. This option has now gone int Unresponsive mode, and I have lost all printing ability.

3. Microsoft Word goes into Unresponsive mode.

4. Pages takes about 5 minutes + to load a Word document

5. If you have a LOT of photos in your Photo albums, I have about 20,000 up, it takes about 15 hours to index them all looking for facial recognition I suppose, and you can't turn it off, or disable it. This is as soon as you upgrade and do the final boot up.

6. Just tried to re-add my two printers. Can't add them. Sierra is failing on errors. Bad Descriptors, and can't download from Support Server.

What else will I find wrong ?

ok. It's looking like I will have to back track to the previous El Capitan. I'm pretty annoyed now, because normally I have no problems.

My other computer, an iMac - upgraded fine.

OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), iOS7 XCode5 ... lots of neat stuff

FWIW, I'm somewhat confused, you seem to say things are not working correctly on your Mini so Sierra is a "dog" but it's fine on your iMac.

It's possible you have software on your Mini that is not compatible with Sierra or prevented it from installing correctly. It's also possible your Mini has a hardware issue.

    Try re-installing Sierra.

Are you saying that it is a dog depending on where it is installed?

I suspect that either you have something installed on the mini that Sierra isn't happy with or something went awry during the installation. I have two suggestions: 1) try reinstalling Sierra after running Disk Directory's First Aid. 2) Back up if you haven't already done so and after erasing the hard drive install Sierra and restore your applications and data.

    Just a follow up.

A Shutdown - wait 10 minutes - reboot seems to have cured the System Preferences -> Printers&Scanners problem. They all came back.

This machine has run quietly and without problems since before Yosemite. Each successive upgrade going smoothly and quickly, as wel las succeeding updates as they come in.

Same software been running on the machine since way back.

Installed Sierra, and the problems started.

Some - not all - user names vanished?

Word - only word, goes into spinnin pizza mode - unresponsive

Pages has trouble loading Word documents? But once loaded, is fine.

apart from those problems I have found so far, and why the System Preferences pane played up I don't know - everything else seems stable enough for the moment.

I have a Carbon Copy of El Capitan I can switch in if this continues to give me grief. For now, I'll wait and see what happens. I use Word every day, but I can work around that.

not having issues, in fact it's more responsive than 10.10 and 10.11 are for me and my system is from 2010

you may post an etrecheck report for further analysis.

Thanks. Normally I would do that. But this machine is running a Mail server, a web server with virtual domains, a dns server, and what ever else. A night mare to try and restore all that with the many interconnected parts.

As I mention elsewhere, hasn't had a problem since about OSX 10.5 what ever the early ones were. Only now. Sierra install just didn't play nice. Frustration levels a bit high, but hopefully things will improve.

    so I'll wait and see.

... as for the other computer, the iMac is a new one that my wife runs. Nothing extra on it but Office 365 for Mac and a few solid, Apple certified apps. Updated in about 35 minutes, and has run fine ever since Monday. As I'd expect. :-)

Office apps not working after major upgrades is common, just reinstall Office properly (don't just toss it in the trash, that tends to make things worse) Word works very well on my MBP.

What do you have running in the background?

    Ok, here it is ...

Looks pretty much ok to me. Couple of little things - but nothing serious.
