Q: iOS 10 iMessage crashing

After updating to iOS 10, my iMessages haven't been the same. The app tries to open but only a show a white screen and then crashes. if I restart my phone, I'll be able to send a few messages before they "get stuck" when sending. The blue send bar doesn't go across screen totally. messages sent as texts aren't received. I have to restart my phone like 30x a day now.

Not yet! In fact, I think the issue is getting worse! I can't send any messages. Restarting my phone isn't fixing the issue anymore.

User troubleshooting includes restart, reset, restore from backup, restore to factory; testing after each step. If restarting the phone is not fixing the issue, then you need to move on in the list. Try a reset, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot, test. If necessary, make sure that you have a current backup, then restore your device from that backup, test. If necessary move to the last step, restore to factory and test.

Yep - same issue here. started 20 minutes after IOS10 update via itunes on an iPhone 5

Only a few messages can be sent before messages "get stuck" with blue bar stopping around 85% across screen.

When in this state, cannot even access messages from the setting, just hangs.

Been doing power/home screen reboot, then imessage works for messages before it dies again.

Backup got saved on 10.0.1 so I cannot rollback to 9.3.5

Was working perfectly fine on 9.3.5.

I can confirm that I have two devices doing the same. The messages app crashes whilst typing and will lose everything typed thus far. Hopefully Apple will monitor these threads and work on a solution.

    Hi Jacques.

never had the messaging app crash but after messages were stuck I couldn't access messages from the setting, it just hanged.

what fixed for me and you could try if you want was "Reset Network Settings" from General>Setting>Reset

You will lose all previously saved Wifi networks and any VPN profiles.

    Hope it works for you.

I am having not only this issue-- and I have rebooted, reset network settings, reset all settings--but I am also having a problem where my Wi-Fi and data just simply stops transferring.  My phone initially crashed doing the 10.2 software upgrade (had to go through restoration and update) and since then nothing has worked properly with respect to data transfer via either LTE or Wi-Fi and my text messages more often than not cannot be sent/don't transfer.

I have same problem as well. I solved it by disabling auto-capitalization. after a while, when you put a dot and start typing, it crashes.

The only way I got iMessage to stop crashing was to turn off:

Auto Cap, Auto Correct, Check spelling and Predictive.

On IOS 10.0.2 on iPhone 7.

Same here with Italian keyboard. Temporary solved turning off Auto Cap, Auto Correct, Check spelling and Predictive.

It happens sometimes with iMessage (not with any of messaging apps I regularly use). I've to reset the phone and go on.

Got till the "restore from backup" step without success. I can't take in consideration the "factory reset" step.
