PeripheralsThere are two potential issues here.
I. Have you thoroughly cleaned out the battery compartment by checking the contact points for the new batteries. They may have got soiled because the previous batteries went bad. Make absolutely sure they are bright and shiny.
2. And have you upgraded to El Capitan from the 10.7.4 Yosemite. This won't have affected the batteries but when you do sort them out, that would be your next problem since the ld trackpad 1 version does not fully function with El Cap.
