Q: iPhone 6 iOS 10 is not recognized by Win10Pro laptop

iPhone 6 iOS 10 is not recognized by Win10Pro laptop

After upgrading to iOS 10 on my iPhone 6, it is no longer being recognized as an external drive by my Win10Pro x64 laptop on either the USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports. New cable is being used to eliminate that as an issue.

Why is this happening?

Do I need to go back to the latest iOS 9.x.x?

Is there and new driver I need to download onto my PC?

I am set to automatically backup to iCloud, but I want to import photos directly to my PC.

Thanks

Vicki

FYI, I have the latest iTunes and iOS versions, but was still unable to view my phone's DCIM folder in Windows Explorer. I found, however, that the phone needs to unlocked prior to connecting.

Did anything resolve this as I have read all these answers and the recommended answer appears to be for an iPhone 7. I have an iPhone 6 and have the exact same problem as the first writer.  It is not recognized by Windows as a device so getting my photos off is a pain.  I have updated the driver, I have iTunes 12.5 and it is the latest version, I've plugged my iPhone in whilst unlocked, I've rebooted many times and still the problem persists.  I really suspect that there is a change in ios 10 and it ***** frankly.

Still a problem. iTunes and everything else, including Windows 10, is up to date. I've given up trying to get my iPhone 6 to appear in the Explorer. I can access it by using the Adobe Phototransfer app on the PC and installed on the iPhone. That sees the iPhone just fine, and I can grab photos from the camera roll and pull them across to the PC. But I can't just see the DCIM folder any more. Apple either doesn't see the problem or isn't interested in fixing it - I've made sure I have iOS 10 updates installed.

This worked for me. I had to have my phone unlocked..plugged it in, and was asked if I allowed my PC to access my drive. I clicked 'allow' and I finally had access to the DCIM and my photos. Thanks! I was getting so frustrated.

Unlocking the phone before connecting to my Win10Pro x64 laptop seemed to solve the issue temporarily, but now after the latest Win10 updates applied this past Thurs. the issue is back, with some new symptoms as well.
All software is up to date on iPhone (10.0.2), iTunes (12.5.1.21), and Win10Pro (all updates applied this past Thursday.)
    The issues now:

    1) iPhone 6 is not recognized as a remote device/drive to download items from the device onto PC. So DCIM is not found as well
    2) iPhone 6 is being recognized by iTunes

    3) Since the update to iOS 10.0.2, every time the iPhone 6 is plugged in it is asking to "Trust this computer" even though the computer has been on and running as has the iPhone 6 since last plugged in to the PC, less than 24 hrs prior, both without being turned off.

I did notice in the readme info on the iOS 10.0.2 update that Apple had recognized the issue and allegedly corrected it, but I have found this is not the case.

I have been using iPhone since the first one in '07. I am due to update under my contract in Dec, but if Apple can't its act resolved, it will be time to dump Apple.

I stumbled across my simpler solution.  If I attached my phone to my Windows 10 PC while it was locked, iTunes could see it, but Windows File Explorer did not - i.e., iphone\Internal Storage\DCIM folder did not appear.  Unlocking the phone at that point had no effect.  If I unlocked my phone before I attached it to my PC, both iTunes and Windows File Explorer would see it - i.e., File Explorer would show the iphone\Internal Storage\DCIM folder.  This behavior started after I upgraded to iOS 10 and iTunes 12.5.1.21, so I don't know which upgrade caused this change (but likely iOS 10).

MikeF4 - this works for me too with Windows10 (unlocking iPhone prior to connecting) regardless of whether you even have iTunes installed.  However, it does not work with Windows8.   I think the combination of iOS10 and Windows8 is the problem here.

One work around is to update the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. You can find it under USB drivers in the Device Manager. Sometimes you will see it showing under portable devices as well showing either Apple or iPhone/iPad etc.

    Right click on the driver.

    Choose Update Driver Software.

Select "Browse my computer for driver software."

Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.”
Click the Have Disk button. If this isn't available, choose a device category like Mobile Phone or Storage Device, if listed.-

Click Next. You should see the Have Disk button.

Click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.

Double-click the "usbaapl" file. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, this file will be called "usbaapl64". If you don't see "usbaapl64" here or if there isn't a Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.

In the Have Disk window, click Open, then click Next, and then click Finish.

Windows will install the driver. If a message says that the software you're installing "has not passed Windows Logo testing," click Continue Anyway.
