Q: Double NAT Error, Need Extreme in DHCP

Hello,

I could use some help with a double NAT error I get when I try to turn on DHCP & NAT or

DHCP only. I just bought a Drobo RAID setup and I'm having trouble getting it recognized on

my network. The Drobo I believe needs to be able to access DHCP but when I switch off bridge

mode I get the Double NAT error. I know what's happening and what that means I'm just not sure

how to fix it. I've been reading about DMZ and thought that might work (I know Apple's version of

this is called Default Host) but need to know if DMZ is a possible workaround or what/where do I

go to make the adjustments I need to get my Drobo recognized. I'm using a Macbook Air as my main

computer with an Airport Extreme attached to WS external hard drive. My modem is I believe a D3

modem that was provided by Comcast but I can double-check that if needed.

I contacted Drobo support about this issue and they told me to contact Apple for help with my  Extreme

so not much help there. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, -John

As you already know then, a Double NAT error means there are two or more routers in series with each other, each trying to perform routing tasks at the same time. The Airport Extreme in bridge mode should passthrough any DHCP requests to the other device using DHCP and NAT, probably your ISP gateway modem/router. That’s how it works on my home network. My Airport Extreme in bridge mode is connected to my AT&T uVerse gateway (WiFi radio turned off). All my devices get their DHCP assignments from the gateway through the Extreme. It might also be possible to put your gateway modem/router into bridged mode instead of the Extreme. That would also get rid of the Double NAT error.
