Q: iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2.  During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound.  Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

SAME EXACT PROBLEM but I'm on Verizon however-  My phone is bad, my wife's identical phone is 100% perfect.  Its a garbled windy static to them,  sometimes no voice audio at all..  and to me, when they talk,  it sounds so distant its like I'm trying to rescue someone out of an abandoned mine shaft.

Update: at the suggestion of the AT&T Store, and because a replacement would be weeks away, we backed up and restored the phone to factory settings through iTunes. We then restored the backup. It has been working fine and without incident since that time (approximately four days).

Another Update: After three days of the attempted fix (ie, restoring to factory settings), the iPhone 7 Plus did the same thing with the microphone. We have called Apple and are shipping it in for a replacement.

I am having the same issue- random crackling/static on my iPhone 7 Plus.  Talked to Apple chat yesterday- they suggested to take it in for repair

I have the exact problem with my iphone7 verizon  the only way people can hear me is by almost sticking the bottom of the phone in my mouth, if its more than 2 inches away its garbled and sound drops to nothing. I have tried a replacement 7 and its still there, i had to turn my old 6 back on and with that phone people can hear me as far as i can hold the phone away with my arm

I have the iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, 256GB, jet black) and just started having a problem with the microphone after nearly two weeks of flawless use.  I first noticed it yesterday during a video recording of a concert.  When I played back my videos, the audio was very muffled and barely audible.  Checked to make sure it wasn't the speakers, but sure enough if was muffled in the recording itself (wasn't distorted, just very very muffled).   Then when I got home from the concert, I did some tests just by recording my voice and some music in my living room.  Sure enough, the audio is cutting out during video recording (if you turn the volume all the way up on playback, there is still some recording going on, but it is barely audible), but then it comes back.  I can repeat this with just about every video recording, and loud sounds seem to trigger it more (but it's even done it just recording my voice with nothing else).

At this point I don't know if it's a software glitch or a hardware issue with the mic.  I am going to restore the phone to see if that fixes it.  Seems like it fixed it for you for a few days, which seemed to indicate a software issue.  But if it came back, what does that mean?  Have you had any problems with the replacement or are you still waiting for it?

Also, are you running the iOS 10.1 beta, or on the regular release?

This sounds like a different issue than ours. But to answre your questions, we tried the software restore, thinking that it would fix the problem, but it didn't. We were using iOS 10.0.2. It really seems like a hardware issue, but we obviously cannot be certain of that. We cannot have a no functioning phone, that is, we can't have these microphone/communication dropouts during calls, so we are sending it back for a replacement.

also so noticed if you are taking videos or pictures and go from something dark to smtg bright the camera goes completely black try it focus on smtg in a dark area then immediately go up to a light it will go black this is for the plus models only I think I have matte black 256 gb att had one replacement already and I guess I need another one same crap etc apple

Same issue here - iPhone 7 Plus 256 running 10.1 beta 2. It's going to be a huge hassle to get this exchanged since they are out of stock everywhere. Ugh.

Also, how in the world is this support site still not mobile friendly? Seems absurd for the the maker of the world's most popular smartphone.

HHopefully its software this is my 2nd plus and same thing I find it hard to  believe

    2. Phones same issue plus ura it has to be the way the mics are using the noice cancellation or smtg. Even tho I've tried with the Boise cancelation off it seems like a software problem or smtg who knows seems like I've had a lot of problems out of this phone tho

I have the same issue with my Iphone7 and running 10.0.2, whenever I'm on a call people will say that they cant hear me and I'll switch the speaker on then off and then I can be heard again. This the first time I'm experienced this with any of my previous iphones.

I got my new iphone 7 today. I have the same exact problem. I'm really mad. If I return my phone to the store (in Bulgaria) I will probably have to wait 2 weeks for new one or for getting it fixed. I'm really angry at apple
