Q: Terrible iPad 2 Speed..any hope for increase?

I have recently rediscovered my iPad 2, and want to use it for personal reading, work/homework (reading and composing/editing large documents), and playing games. As of now (as with the countless others who have the same complaint)  since the newest update, my iPad 2 takes a frustrating amount of time while using safari, switching between or opening apps, loading or downloading any documents or school and work videos. I have checked my router/wifi connections, reset the ipad to factory settings, and even made an effort to run only one app at a time and manually fetch emails so that I am not "bogging down" the processor.

What input do you have to speed it up? I have read that there will be no further updates for the iPad 2, so does that now make my 2 year old model obsolete and doomed to be slower than molasses for basic apps? Can you give me some explanation/insight about the hardware- how is it so different from the newer models? Does this mean I literally have no option to upgrade this device? To my understanding it is not easy to revert to older updates.

I am looking for realistic expectation of what this thing will be able handle- when Ive had no issues before I found and updated to this new operating system. I have a Mac (on El Capitan) and an iPhone 6s (also on 9.3.5), so its not necessary to use for homework, but would make my life much easier.

iPad 2, iOS 9.3.5, null
