Q: El Capitan & Legacy Photoshop

I installed El Capitan in January 2016.  HUGE mistake, as I have not been able to use my Photoshop CS3 since, and I'm an artist.  I have lost business as a result of losing Photoshop.  El Capitan will not allow me to install the Legacy  Java 6, and I'll be damned if I am forced to pay a monthly fee for what I already have, and have Adobe hold my work hostage if I stop paying.

I am afraid to upgrade to Sierra, because this last nightmare with El Capitan.

What can I do to get Photoshop CS3 to work again?  If it's not possible, is there another program like Photoshop (and Adobe Illustrator, which also no longer functions) that doesn't charge a monthly fee, to replace it? (I have search for this answer for months, and nothing I have come across has been helpful.)

MacBook 1,1, Mac OS X (10.4.7), White

You need to install the correct version of Java. It's looking for Apple's Java 6.

Old version. Do not use. Java for OS X 2014-001

Current version. Use this one. Download Java for OS X 2015-001

You should take a look at Affinity Designer and Photo. Moderately priced and I believe they have free trials. Very nice programs.

if you have a backup of your system when CS3 and OS X worked together you can restore to that point. Otherwise Apple wants to sell you computers that run modern OS's and Adobe wants you to pay them monthly to use software they support on those OS's. neither of these companies make any money with anyones loyalty unless that loyalty translates into sales of hardware for Apple and monthly subscriptions for Adobe Software. You could be loyal for two decades, and while they may or may not appreciate it the bottom line is they make nothing off that unless it translates to a steady flow of revenue.

Thanks so much.  I tried this many times before, but it never worked.  It didn't work the first time I tried it from your link, either.   It worked the second time, though.

This solved my problem.  Unfortunately, the "this solved my problem" button doesn't work!

The Solved button actually did work. It's a somewhat recent bug in Jive (the software these forums run on). If you mark a post Helpful, it shows the gold star right away. But a Solved shows as if nothing happened. If you refresh the page, or exit the topic and come back in, you'll see it did indeed mark the post you chose as Solved.
