Q: I have injected a DVD into my Apple USB Super Drive and nothing appears on my MacBook Air display screen and I cannot eject the DVD using FINDER. What can I do to eject the DVD which is probably defective?

My MacBook Air

OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6

Processor 1.3 GHz intel Core i5

Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I injected an older DVD into my Apple USB Super Drive, and no contents appear on my display screen. I believe the DVD is defective, but I cannot eject it from the drive, not even from Finder. Help.

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3

    Hey cfongemie,

Thanks for being a part of Apple Support Communities.

To help resolve this issue where your Mac isn't ejecting a DVD from the USB Super Drive, please follow these steps below:

If you can’t eject a CD or DVD

Choose Apple menu > Log Out, then log in again. Try to eject the disc again.

If you still can’t eject the CD or DVD, choose Apple menu > Restart. While your computer restarts, hold down the mouse or trackpad button until the disc is ejected.

    Cheers.

If you can 'see' the disc media and the external USB Apple superdrive

in Disk Utility, you could probably use that utility to eject the disc...

There is an eject icon or menu option in Disk Utility to eject stuff.

In the Disk Utility workspace you can usually see a list of items and

connected USB devices. If SuperDrive appears, click on its name or

use available means to specifically direct the Utility to show the Media.

You should be able to eject the Media, if you can see the SuperDrive

    in Disk Utility.

And if you cannot see the Apple USB SuperDrive in Disk Utility or in

the system profiler (about this mac, more information, hardware) it

may be the SuperDrive has failed or somehow is not supported.

There is a repair guide at iFixit.com (mac devices) for replacement of

the optical drive, which is inside the Apple USB SuperDrive's case...

see the answers (as applicable) in the section beneath guide link:

    • Apple USB SuperDrive  iFixit guide

To remove/replace the Optical Drive from Apple USB SuperDrive case:

    • Optical Drive replacement - ifixit guide

Not sure what is going on there, either software or hardware.

Be sure the Apple USB superdrive is positioned correctly...

    Good luck!
