Q: Safari 10: missing 'Safari opens with'

Hello,

Did anyone notice that 'Safari opens with:...' option is missing?

For example '...All windows from last session'

I would like to set automatically to re-open all tabs from last session after opening Safari.

Am I missing something or just Safari is missing that option?

Any solution for this?

Opening all tabs -one by one- all the time is really irritating.

Cheers.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), macOS Sierra (10.12), Safari 10

Try going to System Preferences/General and uncheck Close windows when quitting an app. See if you can set it.

It is unchecked. I just tried to test it with checked and unchecked but issue still persists.

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferenes, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. Ok. The system was totally reinstalled before I posted this issue.

I tried running in safe mode - didn't work.

I tried to open Safari on another account - didn't work.

BUT. When I go to Safari preferences > General and when I also open System preferences > General > 'Close windows when I close app' then:

    - With unchecked "Close windows when I close app" - there is missing "Safari opens with"

    - With checked "Close windows when I close app" - "Safari opens with" shows.

I tried to reopen Safari with both - checked and unchecked. Issue still persists.

Soo... whatever I do, system will read that as "Close windows when I close apps".

Yes, I did format my HD before installing new system. It is not a problem for me to reinstall OS once again - I've got nothing on my computer now.

    Etrecheck report looks clean.

    Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

    Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Sill not working. It does not want to cooperate with me

Do you have any other solution?

If not I will just format my drive and reinstall OS.
