Q: Why does a strange alphabet appear when I'm typing in an address box. The insertion is slow and halting and numbers and letters often repeat on their own?

I'm using the new Sierra, but the problem predates this.

Whenever I'm trying to type in a command or an address, a strange alphabet appears with letters in blue and numbers underneath. The inserting stalls, and numbers and letters then repeat on their own. I can't get out of it.

This problem comes and goes, with no real pattern to when it happens.

It occurs when I'm typing in internet addresses, etc., and when I'm typing commands for the operating system.

Of course now that I want to show it, it doesn't happen. Mainly because I restarted the computer. It will be back!

    Jack,

First remove all (except the IJ scanner) entries in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath.

    Then restart. Then

    1. Uninstall Bitdefender (and Traffic Light in SysPrefs) and CleanMyMac: both crap and creating all kind of issues.

after a complete uninstall restart again.

    2. Uninstall the WD (Western Digital) software: counterproductive, OS can handle the WD disks very well without it.

    3. Uninstall Adguard Adblocker (SystemPreferences).

    Restart.

How is it now? Perhaps a new etrecheck list to see if I forgot anything.

I still see bit defender listed as well as AdBlock. Thought I got rid of them

    Thanks,

    Bitdefender uninstall

Most people advise not to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

    CleanMyMac 3 Uninstall

After un-installing, use this program to make sure you got all the pieces.

    Hi jack,

as you can see there are some leftovers.

    1. Bitdefender: not uninstalled completely. Use the link of Eric Root. If necessary install it again then uninstall completely.

    2. ClanMyMac3, the uninstaller is in the app: in the main menu on the left there is an "uninstall" (I think it is #6): uninstall CleanMyMac itself. If necessary reinstall then uninstall. To be sure check also the link Eric Root posted.

    3. WDC kexts are still there: you can remove these two by hand in the Finder, but be very careful in that folder:

MacintoshHD->System->Library->Extensions: open that folder and delete them.

    4. Personally I prefer Adblock over Adguard Adblock.  as Safari extension.

    5. If you still have the Canon printer/scanner, you should reinstall the Canon IJ driver: it needs to be started up with the mac or it will not work. If you do not have that Canon printer/scanner: do nothing.

    6. I think the sudoers file will not do anything wrong as it is now, but if you want we change that one to be as "expected". Tell me.

    Eric,

Thanks for your help. Bitdefender was a nightmare to get rid of. Also a nightmare to install.

And thanks for the tip on Easy Find. It picked up leftover fragments of bitdefender.

    Hey Eric,

    It's back!

Seems I can't get rid of bit defender.

I've done all you suggested. Also went to bit defender website to get details on how to remove and uninstall it. Did all that. Used Easy Find, found files and deleted them. They reappear. Used AppCleaner and found more files and tried to delete them and it said I didn't have permission. Went to Library and tried to remove it and it said I didn't have permission to delete it. I went in and checked permission. I'm pretty sure I'm OK there.

When I reboot I get a notice that tells me Bitdefender update successfully installed. I have an icon in the menu bar that doesn't disappear. It's seems as if there is something that automatically loads this thing that I can't find or delete.

    Driving me nuts!

    Any thoughts?

    Jack
