Q: Suddenly can't sync to iTunes or iPhoto

I synced my phone to iTunes right before I updated to iOS 10.

Since the update, I am unable to sync to iPhoto or iTunes.

iPhoto gives me the error "Photos in the Camera Roll of <phone name> cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode"

It is not locked.

iTunes tells me "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone <phone name> because an invalid response was received from the device"

My iPhone 5s is NOT jailbroken. The screen is NOT locked. There are NO other passcode restrictions on the account.

This is my first time trying to connect since updating to iOS 10.

Every other thread I have seen regarding this issue is from 2012-2014 time frame. All say to restart the phone, or to TRUST this computer when asked. I have done both. Multiple times.

I am on an old first gen Mac Pro. I can only go to OS 10.7.5 with it, but have never had any issues until now.

Does iOS 10 not work with older OSs?

Any other suggestions for getting this to work again?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

An iPhone with iOS 10 requires the latest version of iTunes, 12.5.1, which requires OS X 10.9.5 or above.

    Me too.

I'm told by the Apple representative that it's because older version of iTunes cannot sync with devices running iOS 10. In my case, my mac cannot update to the latest version of iTunes, thus creating this invalid response ridiculosity. I honestly think this is Apple's fault. This is a shady and greedy move. If they had informed the end users before the phone gets updated to iOS 10 that this is a situation that will arise for users with slightly older versions of iTunes, I'm sure this issue could've been easily dodged. Instead, they let this happen and then force their product users to purchase another newer but not necessarily better or more innovative product from them.   Greedy.

Actually, the technical specifications for all software updates are provided with the release notes. It is up to the end user to determine if their devices and/or configurations will support updates. While I'm not a Mac user, from what I have read here, it seems that the versions of OS X required for the newer iOS, and the problems users are experiencing is because their versions of OS X are rather old, at least in technology terms. The same things have happened with Windows computers and iTunes as well. It isn't something exclusive to Apple.

I was able to get photos off my iPhone6 running iOS 10 by connecting it to a Dell mini 9 running Ubuntu 10.0.4 !! If I can access the phone using a truly archaic system, then it is a conscious decision by Apple to kill such connectivity for my Mac Pro running 10.7.5.
