Q: spotlight appears transparent or part invisible

Greetings & thanks in advance for your help!

I am trying to fix spotlight on my computer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, as you can see from the screenshots included here, spotlight usually appears transparent or partly invisible on my screen, making it nearly impossible to find the files I am looking for. I would love to fix this.

Some more details:

This problem with spotlight is rather frustrating to me, as I tend to need to search for files on my computer dozens of times per day. I am usually juggling scores of .doc & .pdf files at any given moment, and about half of the space on my hard drive is taken up with such files. Usually, I just use the search feature in finder instead, but I really liked the way spotlight used to work in older versions of mac OS where it appeared in the upper right hand corner. I do not like how the spotlight on my current OS appears in the center of the screen, either. Since it now takes up such valuable real-estate in the center of the screen, the least it could do is work. It has never worked properly on this machine so long as I remember.

If I do say so myself, I am usually quite good at finding what I am looking for on the internet, but I have looked quite a bit and have not found any helpful material addressing how to solve this problem. Ergo, I am posting here (but do please let me know if I should be posting in different forum). Hoping you can help. Please also let me know if you need any more info... Thanks again!
