Q: sync identical folders on two Macs

I am new to iCloud Drive sync, and got something I did not expect.

I have Mac A and Mac B (both on Sierra). Using Sugarsync in the past, the document and desktop folders are exact clones of each other. When I make a change or add file in Mac A, it syncs the change in Mac B.

So, I used iCloud Drive to sync my desktop and documents folders, using the same Apple ID. Here is what I did not expect. I have now two sets of everything on both computers. One set in the main documents/desktop folder and one set in a newly created subfolder.

Ex- I added a file to Mac A desktop, that document was placed into a subfolder on Mac B called "Mac A Desktop". I would have expected it to just go on the Mac B desktop. Is there a way to do this sugarsync like??

In my Mac A Documents, I now have a new subfolder called "Mac B Documents" full of everything from Mac B. Vice Versa on Mac A. So everything is doubled.

Is this just how iCloud works or did I do something incorrect?

Thanks for any help.

    Hi mpgartland,

Thanks for posting your question in the Apple Support Community!  I understand you have some questions about syncing your files using iCloud Drive. This is a great way to keep your documents synced across all of your devices, and I'm happy to offer some information.

I'd recommend taking a look at this support article that goes over information about adding your documents to iCloud Drive.

In Finder, your Desktop and Documents folders move out of Favorites and into the iCloud section of your sidebar. If you add a second Mac Desktop, you'll find those files in the Desktop folder in iCloud Drive. A folder is created with the same name as your second Mac.
