Feb 11, 2016 2:27 PM in response to oberseeby Jason L,Hi obersee,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If I understand correctly, you're able to see events in the Calendar app on your iPhone but events that are more than a year old aren't appearing when searching the Calendar app. The article below provides general app troubleshooting tips that may resolve the issue the Calendar app.
If an app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open - Apple Support
Restart the app
Close the app and open it again.
Restart your device
Turn your device off and back on.
Check for iOS and app updates
- Make sure that you're using latest version of iOS.
If the issue persists, you can try ruling out an issue with iOS by restoring the iPhone as shown here:
Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support
Cheers.

Feb 22, 2016 5:21 AM in response to Jason Lby obersee,WIsh that was the solution, but apparently it is still a known issue and I have submitted feedback to Apple after finding this thread below. See this link below with users complaining in 2011 and it still not being fixed according to other users as of last month in this thread:

May 27, 2016 1:19 PM in response to oberseeby bobbyfromsandiego,Yep, issue/feature is still there. Apple may be doing this in consideration of performance, but I wish they'd provide an override switch for people needing the functionality.

Sep 29, 2016 2:10 PM in response to oberseeby Non-tek User,Have same problem in my iOS devices. Searching calendar on my MacBook finds the old dates.
Probably on pc but I haven't tried that.
Not a viable mobile solution - Apple needs to resolve on a high-priority level.
