Q: iPhone 6S Plus Full of Images

Hi. I have an iPhone 6S Plus and I have filled it up the camera roll. In doing that I also started deleting apps installed on my iPhone to make room for more images. Recently I noticed an option for additional storage available in iCloud bringing my storage option to 1.9TB Available if you go from home > settings > icloud > storage.  In addition, home > settings > icloud > photos is 'on' with 'icloud photo library' also 'on' which should allow me to "automatically upload and store your entire library in icloud to access photos and videos from all your devices." 'optimize iphone storage' is also checked off.  So my question is, how can i use this extra storage that I am paying for monthly to reliably store all my photos from my iphone in icloud while freeing up my iPhone camera (without affecting the images stored in icloud) to take more pictures and videos?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2

    Hi there Edbak,

It sounds like you are wanting to know how to get the most out of your iCloud storage and free up some space on your phone without affecting your stored data. As long as your entire Photos Library is stored in iCloud, you can indeed turn on Optimize iPhone Storage to keep what are basically just the thumbnails on your phone, leaving the original quality originals on iCloud. That being said, go ahead and film to your hearts content and it will all be uploaded to iCloud automatically, and your local storage will be managed automatically in the background.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Let us know if you have any other questions.

    That's just it though.

If you go to home > settings > photos & camera > icloud photo library  is 'on' on my phone which would result in "automatically upload and store your entire library in icloud to access photos and videos from all your devices.  However it says beneath "low disc space - uploading 7,528 items" yet under home > settings > icloud > storage there is 1.9 TB available.  So on one hand, I've upgraded icloud storage yet my phone is still fulll and my  local storageis not managed automatically in the background which is exactly the problem.

    Thank you for your help!

Oh ok, thank you for the clarification. I would next turn off iCloud Photo Library altogether. Then quit Settings and Photos:

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once that is done, restart the phone and turn iCloud Photo Library back on. This should reset the sync data and get your photos to upload to iCloud, so the space can be freed.

    Thanks. I have done that.

A dialog window then shows up saying " iCloud Restore in Progress - iCloud Photo Library will begin syncing when this device has finished restoring from back up | OK"

So why would rebooting my iPhone invoke an iCloud Restore? And since I am in the middle of an iCloud Restore, I have no progress bar to know where I am in the process.

Under settings > icloud drive > on > "allow aps to store documents and data in iCoud." There is a progress bar  saying "uploading 56 items (Zero KB of 13.7 MB) and the bar never moves.

Still cannot take a photo from the photo app either as "there is not enough available storage to take a photo. you can manage your storage in settings."

Would appreciate your continued support to resolve this. Thank you!
