Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I know how important it is to be able to rely on your battery life throughout the day and I'd like to help as much as I can. As your device is over 2 years old it is possible that the battery may have come to the end of its life cycle. You have a few different options though. As you said, you can upgrade. Alternatively, if you like your iPhone 5s, Apple does offer a battery replacement service. You can learn more about that a the link below:
