Q: Cannot pair 7th Nano to my bluetooth headset

Apple replaced my 1st Gen nano with a 7th Gen. I could not pair it with my M1 headphones, it just did not see them. The headphones could be detected with an ipad or Macbook Pro, and Samsung Android phone. The Apple store checked it and said it has an issue and gave me a new one. Stupidly I did not take their advice and try it in the store. Well, the new one does not pair either. My headphones support A2DP1.2 and AVRCP1.4. The Nano supports A2DP and AVRCP but no version of them are mentioned.  The Nano does not discover the headphones.  The other devices do. I cannot believe I have had two bad Nano's, my guess neither was. So what do I do. I really feel I spent too much time on this already, so I hope I can get a quick answer before I just sell the thing.

Doubtful that you got two in a row that are faulty.  Take a look at the user guide, starting page 53, for procedural reference

    https://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1624/en_US/iPod_nano_2015_user_gui de.pdf

In case your MacBook Pro or Samsung phone is blocking or interfering with the iPod's pairing, shut down MacBook and turn OFF Android phone (or turn OFF their Bluetooth).

I appreciate you trying to help. I previously read the manual. The Macbook Pro is miles away at the Apples store, and all my bluetooth devices are off. The headset works with all the other devices regardless of what order I attempt to pair them. Pairing is easy, the Ipod simply does not even discover the headphones. This is supposed to be simple, it is not. My ipod (either one) showed anything under the devices. So far it is useless to me. The Apple store people could not get my first one to discover, but my headphones could be discovered by their MacBook Pro in a flash just as the cases of my other devices. It isn't the headphones, it is the iPod in some way and nothing I am doing wrong as the store people could not get it to work. I don't believe going back to store will accomplish anything.  Hopefully someone has some idea or I will just get rid of the thing as it is an annoyance actually.

If you (or Apple Store staff) have not already, do a Restore on the iPod in iTunes.  The Restore button is on the iPod's Summary settings screen in iTunes.  This erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default settings.  Maybe there's something wrong with the "factory" install/configuration of iPod's onboard software.

FYI - To get to iPod's Summary settings screen, connect iPod with iTunes running.  In iTunes click iPod's device button, near upper-left corner of iTunes window.

At the Apple Store Genius Bar, are they able to try your iPod nano with different Bluetooth headphones?  To rule out some odd incompatibility with your particular headphones...  Or do you know someone with different Bluetooth headphones you can try with your iPod nano?

I can't think of anything else, except that you actually got two iPod nanos in a row with faulty Bluetooth.  If you want an "iPod" with Bluetooth and small physical size is not the key consideration, get a refund and buy a 6th gen iPod touch instead.  It's only $50 more (retail) for the 16GB version, and it's a full iOS computing device, like iPhone and iPad (unlike the media player iPod nano).  Basically an "iPad nano"...

When I went to the Apple store, I let them diagnose the issue in the way they chose and they saw that the Nano could not be discover the headphones and other devices would. Maybe when I more time to waste I will go back again, maybe not.  The headphones I will keep, the Nano will go. I only got it because it was a free replacement for a recall of my 1st Gen Nano which surprisingly Apple did for me 11 years later.  If I would have bought it, I would I have returned it. I really have little use for this thing so I am just going to sell it for $50 and be done with it.

I called Apple to check on the Version of A2DP is has and that is not available.  There is no answer to this. So it may work or some other bluetooth devices, but there is no real way to check compatibility. Technically my headphones should work. So I am just getting rid of of the iPod. The fact that Apple does not give the version of A2DP makes trying to solve this impossible. I'm done.
