Your configuration is similar to mine, but my iMac is of late 2014 vintage.  I continue to run Aperture because of numerous reasons.  First, the file management is easy.  Second, many plugins still work flawlessly such as On1, Creative Kit, and NIK.  Third, I can still import and export.  Albeit, cannot seem to change export parameters on a permanent basis.  If you want serious power to adjust images, then Photos is a waste of time.  I'm not that fond of Adobe Lightroom either.  I have learned to work with DXO, but the file management is rather a pain.  Ultimately, Aperture works for some using Sierra and fails with others.  At some point in time, you will need to make a transition.  I've decided to wait it out, so to speak.  In my opinion, Apple made a substantial mistake when deciding not to maintain support for Aperture.

Just thought I'd point out, that rebuilding an Aperture library doesn't take long at all. Hold down alt and command keys when you start the program, and choose to rebuild. Just took about a minute for my library of about 2000 images. What did take some time was taking care of those images which were moved into a "recovered" folder. Don't delete them without exporting a backup first! You may find as I did, that the seeming duplicates are linked both to the other as 'originals'. Only solution was to export, import them back in again, copy-stamp the metadata back, and then delete the faulty ones. (Of course, that may not happen to everybody.)

The above procedure fixed my crashes, including the crash on entering fullscreen. Actually, it crashed for just about anything. I've been using it for a couple of days now, without a hitch. Topaz plug-ins, very important to me, also are working, even though I noticed TopazLabs have removed Aperture as a supported host.

Well considering this is the first suggestion I've seen from someone for whom it actually fixed the issue, I'll give it a shot.

(All of those generic recommendations from people with no knowledge of the actual problem always remind me of the bad ol' days when the recommended fix for every Windows problem was to reinstall the operating system.)

    Edit: Nope, didn't help.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I use the Mac App Store version of Aperture, by the way, don't know if that makes a difference.

Forgot to mention, that fullscreen does go all black now the first time after starting the program, but two presses on F takes care of it (that is, out of fullscreen and then back in again). Same thing happened a while back; I believe a system update fixed it then. It's a minor nuisance.

I get an error when I hit "H" to bring up the HUD. When it does come up, the Library, Info, and Adjustments tabs are there, but there's nothing below them except for the Info tab. Now I have to use the adjustments bar on the side of the window.
