Q: Problem with mail app after upgrade to El Capitan

Hi,

I recently upgraded from snow leopard to el capitan on a 2009 macbook pro.

I cannot send email from the mail app since upgrading.

The incoming mail server address is greyed out in the apps preference settings under "Account Information". It reads "p02 - imap.mail.me.com". My full iCloud user name is also greyed out. There does not appear to be any way to fix this up. I believe that the correct server address should be "imap.mail.me.com".

The outgoing server address is "stmp.mail.me.com".

Switching on iCloud Drive makes no difference. I have also tried deleting the iCloud account on the "Accounts" page under mail app preferences and setting up the account again. Also makes no difference.

I can send email using the mail app on my iPhone and receive email on my mac and iPhone.

Any suggestions about how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Mail v9.3, Safari v 10

You need to go to System Preferences->Internet Accounts to fix the server details. These things are no longer set inside the Mail application. It may seem strange but it makes sense, since accounts are used not just for email but for other services. Now there is a central location for that.

    Hi Luis,

Thanks for your response, but things did not workout. I changed the server details and saved them when requested to do so. Unfortunately the incoming server details now show up as "imap.gmail.com" and my email address in the iCloud account details under accounts shows the email address I use for my Apple ID.

When I try to re-enter the correct details for my iCloud account I get a message that says there is a problem with my Apple ID email address or password and a direction to open the iCloud System Preferences to fix it. The Apple ID account details are correct and I can also log into my Apple ID account.

However, if I click on the email icon in my iCloud Account web page a dialogue box appears directing me to go to iCloud in system preferences on the mac to set up an email account. I decided to try to do this, but as soon as I entered my iCloud email address into the box for the name of my account it was rejected as the address was already taken (i.e. it's my email address).

I still get and send iCloud email on my iPhone.

Is it worthwhile just deleting the mac email account and restoring it from my time machine backup?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated?

    Cheers

I don't understand what exactly you are doing.

If I look at my iCloud account in System Preferences->Internet Accounts, there is no place to change the servers.

It is all set up automatically.
