I think this will delete all settings related to the server.app.

From which MacOS-version do you want to upgrade?

You can remove shares also in systempreferences/shares.

If you had enabled caching-server or update-server, you have to delete these files in other places. These folders are located on different places, maybe on other volumes. It depends on your configuration and preferences.

I had to delete the whole  /Library/Server folder. After I did that everything installed fine.

How did you retain your previous settings?

I always make a full copy of my startup-volume with ccc to an extern drive/volume. Chronosync or something else will work too.

With these apps you can also make a copy from selected folders.

So can you just copy your previous Library/Server Folder back after Server upgrade as completed? I thought it made changes to these folders/files during the upgrade.

You cannot copy the new Server-folder to the old system. There were made changes for sure!

Didn't you make a backup from your whole old system?

If you have a full copy of your old server, you can use this backup.

If you don't have, you have to use your El Capitan server with the new settings. The old settings can't be upgraded like you told in your first question.

You wanted the possibility for a fresh server. I told you, how you can get this. You wrote, this worked fine. What do you want now?

If I upgrade the OS to El Capitan, I can't install Server 5.2 because of the title message. If I remove Library/Server to allow install of Server.app I don't have my server settings & data. I can return to my clone, but then I haven't got an upgraded El Capitan server.
