Q: macOS Sierra FileVault enabled freezing at login

My MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) has been consistently freezing at login with FileVault enabled on  Yosemite, El Capitan and now Sierra (all clean-installed). When the login screen appears I can eventually type a password and log in but everything is extremely slow and unresponsive. I tried turning FileVault on and off but it would help only temporarily. Now that this issue returned on Sierra again I'm starting to get worried. Any ideas / pointers for a fix?

    Hi piotrbakker.

Did you do a clean install of Sierra, or an update?  I was having this same problem after doing just the update.  I did a clean install and still had the same problem.  BTW, I never had this with El Capitan.

Anyway, I read a suggestion to start in safe mode (reboot or turn on and hold shift key until you the an apple).  This is supposed to complete configuration of items that may not have initially completed.  When you're in safe mode, simply reboot or power down/up and it will boot into normal mode.  So far, so good.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply! I tried that previously on both Yosemite and El Capitan but the issue always came back eventually... sometimes after a few weeks. But I will try it again maybe will have more luck with Sierra this time. Only now need to wait to have my laptop back from repair (unrelated issue with damaged display coating that also happened today! ... )

Well, it worked initially, but not anymore.  I continue to have issues similar to yours.

Yes exactly that used to be my problem as well. I asked about it at the Genius Bar and the guy that was helping me never heard of this issue. I asked that they take a look it as well (in addition to fixing my display) so maybe I will hear something back when it's done in a few days. I will make sure to post their response here.

Well, in my case, the issue was File Vault.  I disabled it and everything is working as normal.  I re-enabled it and the problem returned immediately.  I then disabled it again and all is normal again.  Strange!

The issue for me was FileVault as well.  Turning it off made the problem go away.  I have tried many iterations and clean installs, bottom line if Filevault is on it happens.  So for now turning it off seems to be the only option until it is resolved by Apple.

It seems like this is the case. The guys at the Genius Bar I spoke to 2 days ago when I picked up my MacBook had never heard of this problem before. Weird that the problem persists for 3 consequitive OS releases.
