Q: Auto-brightness toggle dissapeared iOS 10.0.2

hi,

My phone wasn't adjusting to ambient light properly (but still auto-adjusting nonetheles), so I went and resetted ( reset all settings option) thinking it would recalibrate. Upon rebooting however, not only did it no longer auto adjust but I also found the "auto-brightness" toggle to have dissapeared.

Tried resetting and restoring both from the iphone and itunes (factory then restoring from backup), but it's still not showing up.

Everything else are still in place and working normally, just the toggle missing. Proximity sensor is still working (screen still goes off whilst placing calls). In fact, searching the query on the settings app still shows the "auto-brightness" feature. But clicking the link just brings me to the "display and brightness" with the toggle still missing.

The phone is brand-new. No drops or damages. So nothing to suggest hardware damage. Everything was working fine until the reset (reset all settings option).

I do have a glass screen protector in place that's only partially covering the sensor, but I don't think that should cause the toggle to disappear altogether from settings does it?

Is anybody experiencing the same problem? Anybody have any suggestions?

This is really bugging me, so any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Kenneml,

Congratulations on your new iPhone 7 Plus! Great way to try resolving the initial issue with resetting of the settings. I understand that you have now lost the toggle switch in your Display & Wallpaper settings for Auto Brightness. Since restoring the device did not bring any positive results, try removing the screen protector completely then restore the device to factory settings using iTunes once more. This time, set up the device as new without restoring from the backup. The ambient light sensor is an important component needed for the Auto Brightness function to work as expected.

    Set brightness or use Auto-Brightness

To adjust brightness, use Control Center. You can also do this from Settings, where you can find extra options like Auto-Brightness:
Go to Settings > Display & Brightness.
Drag the slider to the right or left.
If your iOS device has an ambient-light sensor, you’ll see an Auto-Brightness setting under the slider. Auto-Brightness uses a light sensor to adjust brightness based on your surroundings. This setting can sometimes improve battery life.
If you want to raise or lower the Auto-Brightness levels, you can customize the setting:
Go to Settings > Display & Brightness and turn on Auto-Brightness. The brightness slider moves according to the lighting conditions.
Use the slider to adjust the Auto-Brightness setting.
If Auto-Brightness isn’t working as expected, reset it. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness and turn off Auto-Brightness. Then turn it on again.

Adjust the display settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities to post your question. The steps above should have the Auto-Brightness feature working as it should. Enjoy your new iPhone 7 Plus!

    Hi Sterling,

Thanks for your reply first of all!

I tried restoring the device again through iTunes, this time even in restore mode. Still nothing.

I presume having/not having a screen protector should not make the toggle disappear correct? I mean even if it's what's interfering with the sensor, the option should still be there albeit it won't work properly.

Should I wait for a new OS release? or what?

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!
