Q: Upgraded to 7+ from 6s. Erased 6s and is stuck in activation lock.

I purchased my first iPhone last year (6s). I setup my apple id and have been using the iPhone quite frequently up until I got the 7+ a couple of days ago. After setting up my 7+ and I'm certain I'm not going to use the 6s anymore I thought I'll erase it. About 30 mins ago I decide to do that and erase all settings and set it up for my mum. So I go through the process and get to the startup screen and it says activation lock is on.

I enter my apple id and it fails. I'm confused.

When using the 6s I've never setup an iCloud account or backed up my Iphone.

I did it for the first time ever today on my 7+.

None has used this phone but me. I have only one apple account and iCloud account (?, are both the same account or two separate accounts)?

I really am confused at this point so decided to log into my apple account. My 7+ is listed under devices and my 6s isn't. First time using the site other than to check my shipping/order iPhone.

What do I do?

Devices owned:

iPhone 6s - latest os 10.02

iPhone 7+ - latest os 10.02

Any and all help appreciated.

iPhone 6s, iOS 10.0.2

You seem to contradict yourself here...

When using the 6s I've never setup an iCloud account or backed up my Iphone.

    and

I have only one apple account and iCloud account (?, are both the same account or two separate accounts)?

It sure sounds like you did have an iCloud account and may have signed in to it on your phone. This would have, by default, enabled Find My Phone, which puts in place the activation lock you are seeing now.

What do you mean by the "apple account" you logged in to? There are several sites that may be considered an apple account.

    Hi.

The 'apple account' is the same apple id that is used to setup/access:

    6s

    7+

    apple.com

    discussions.apple.com (this topic)

The quoted text: I've never setup the iCloud account on the 6s. Ive never bothered to. The only reason I did for the 7+ was when doing the first setup I had to.

And when setting up the 7+ I was going through the settings and I went to iCloud section and did my first back up and enabled the find my phone.

Without knowing it would do an activation lock on my 6s I did a complete wipe. Ive entered my details but it says my 6s isn't linked to my (the one I setup the phone with) apple id.

I have no idea what account its tied to now nor what I need to do.

    Help!

It still sounds as if you somehow and in some way, "signed in" to your Apple ID on the 6. Once signed in to iCloud on the 6, you may have been completely unaware you had done so. It is designed to work silently in the background without much need for day to day "communication"

This can't be what happened. Enabling Find My Phone on the 7 would have had zero affect on the 6.

Although you use the same Apple ID, this is a device by device setting.

Who or what is "it"? iCloud.com? Is there any content on iCloud.com? Photos? Contacts? Calendars?

And when setting up the 7+ I was going through the settings and I went to iCloud section and did my first back up and enabled the find my phone.

Why did you back up a brand new phone as one of your first to-do's? What content was on it at that point? Had you somehow restored data from the iPhone 6 to it? Using iTunes?

Howe did you wipe the 6? That could explain why there is no record of it now. You unlinked it already.

While the 6 was still up and running I did an erase all content and settings.

I have never connected the the phone to a pc to use iTunes. I have only used iTunes one to enable a trial of Netflix then cancelled it asap so I wouldn't get billed If I forgot to cancel it next billing period.

I have not backed up any settings, texts, reminders, notes, photos etc. to iCloud on 6.

I setup the 7 exactly as I had the 6. Then I did a backup of app data and enabled find my phone after I clicked on the iCloud section on the phone. Ater setting up iCloud on 7 I had no reason to use my 6, that's when I just went straight to reset then erase all content and settings.

Ive contacted apple by phone and talked to a rep. They told me that is probable that I did use another account (the one that was created when I made the purchase and forgot about it).

They asked me to email proof of purchase (which I did) and in a couple of days time remove the account tired to the phone and email me instructions on how to get it up and running again.

I thank you for the help as I've come to understand not to make such a simple mistake again.

Ok... my question was... did you ever *sign in* to iCloud on the 6.

You have not answered that question yet. It seems you don't remember doing that, which is not the same as saying you didn't.

You also didn't answer if your 7 had data on it after setting it up. Again, why would you back it up if it didn't have any data on it. If it had data/content on it and you did not use iTunes, it must have come from iCloud. Which means you did, perhaps unknowingly, use iCloud on your 6.

I wasn't asking if you if you used any of the iCloud services or features. You made it clear you feel you hadn't.

Bottom line, by *just* signing in to iCloud on a phone, you are enabling Find My Phone which also enables activation lock.

I was attempting to help you understand what likely happened.

I don't ever remember signing in to iCloud on 6. Every time I was given a prompt I closed/skipped the dialogue box. I personally think I didn't but somehow I did.

I didn't have any data in the 7. I was prompted or see anything transferred over.

I appreciate the help and support.
