Q: IOS 10 update, and phone doesn't work

I just updated to IOS10 with my iphone 5C and my phone now no longer recognizes my carrier Verizon, and the phone function no longer works.  My number doesn't even show up in contacts!  The upper left has Searching showing.  Not sure how to get it to work as a phone again?

iPhone 5c, iOS 10.0.2

    Hi cawashblu,

I understand that after updating your iPhone, you are no longer able to connect to your cellular services and instead you are only seeing "Searching". I know it's important to be able to use your iPhone for phone calls, so I'm happy to help.

Try restarting your iPhone first, then check out the additional troubleshooting we've got outlined here:

If you can't connect to a cellular network or cellular data - Apple Support

If you see No Service or Searching

If you see No Service or Searching on your device, or can't connect to a cellular network or cellular data, follow these steps:

    1. Check your coverage area to make sure that you're in an area with cellular network coverage.

      • If you can't connect to a cellular network on your iPhone, make sure that cellular data is on in Settings > Cellular*. On your iPad, go to Settings > Cellular Data.
      •
      • If you're traveling internationally, make sure that your device is set up for data roaming. Go to Settings > Cellular > Data Roaming.

    2. Restart your iPhone or iPad.
    3. Check for a Carrier Settings Update.
    4. Update your iPhone or iPad to the latest version of iOS.
    5. Take out the SIM card and put it back in. If the SIM card is damaged, or doesn't fit in the SIM tray, contact your carrier.
    6. Reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.
    7. If you have another device, see if you can connect your carrier's network with it in that location.
    8. Contact your carrier to:

      • Verify that your account is active and in good standing.
      •
      • Make sure there are no outages in your area.
      •
      • Check that your device isn't blocked from receiving cellular services and is set up with the right data plan.
      •
      • If you still can't connect to a cellular network, and have confirmed with your carrier that there isn't an issue with your account or network, try restoring your device.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!

My phone does not say "No service" nor does it say "searching." It just shows 5 empty dots. I've tried most of the recommended actions. I'm not going to restore the phone because it takes too long and has not helped anyone yet, apparently. Moved the SIM card to my old iPhone 5 with IOS 10, and it's working just fine, so there is obviously an obscure bug in ios 10 that affects some phones but not all. We got this phone in week 1 of iPhone 5 release. The other phone is a few months younger.

I updated to ios10 on Oct 1 and have not had cell service since then.  I can text and search but no calls in or out.  I have reset back to network settings, taken out sim card and put back in.  I don't want to do a whole restore.  What is the issue.  Says the network is verizon, but I have 5 empty dots.  Nothing.  Very frustrating.

Oh man. First, let me start off by saying it's not the new update. My iphone 5s has been doing that to me for quite some time now. The only way to fix it is to restore it. Ive called iphone tech support many times over this issue, and every person I've spoken to has said they've never heard of a phone doing that. Your phone might start doing this too, but ive noticed my phone only does this if it dies or if I turn it off.

Did a restore and still no phone!  Very annoying.

I'm sorry. I saw in your initial post that you can text? My phone gets stuck in searching mode. I can't text, place calls, or really do anything at all. Since your restore didn't work, you might have to put it in DFU/recovery mode and then do your restore. I had to do that the first time my phone got stuck in searching, but all the other times I've only had to do a simple restore.

Well, after three hours at the Apple store they learned that when I updated to OS10, the software cooked both my phone's antenna and the SIM card.  They explained that OS10 uses the antenna more, and as soon as OS10 came up, it cooked it.  They were not sure why the SIM card was fried, but assumed since it all happened at once it was also caused by OS10.  They sold me a new 5C for a very reduced price, and tried to find on with OS9 on it, because OS10 was causing so many problems.  (I noticed I got the last 5C in the store, made me wonder how many phones they were going through) I went to Verizon to activate the new card.  Then things got more interesting.  The Verizon rep rolled her eyes and said, "We have had a stream of people with OX10 issues." She setup the new card, and I was good to go!

That is wild! My searching issue started before I had iOS10. One night I let my phone die, I plugged it in and went to bed. When I looked at it the next morning it was like that. I've always been able to do a restore or put it into recovery mode and have it fix the problem. It's definitely a pain in the *** having to do that. Also making sure my phone doesn't die ever. Glad you don't have to go through that hassle! Cheers!
