iMac went black after today's update. I tried rebooting and get the chime, briefly get the gray startup screen before it flickers black. Everything I've tried from trying to run in safe mode to resetting the SMC gives the same result. I do not have another computer to try target mode nor do I have it on a disc. It automatically installed from the App Store. Ever since the last couple OS updates, forget which one, it stopped recognizing data cd's. I am at a loss here. Late 2009 iMac with 8GB RAM.

I also get the red square behind the apple logo for a split second during boot on my late 2015 iMac. No green bar tho. Does not happen when booting in safe mode.

You are correct Alan regarding booting in safe mode, check the progress bar again it should be green as well. what about at shut down. Do you have the missing spinning wheel in the middle? In the El Capitan everything was fine. I spoke to a senior advisor who had the same thing on an older computer. Three weeks after APPLE came out with a FIX. They should take their time when bringing out new programs to avoid aggravating and unnecessary discomfort.

AFTER REVIEWING ALL THE DATA, APPLE HAS CREATED QUITE A VAST PROBLEM TO MANY.IT IS NOW UP TO APPLE TO MAKE THESE CORRECTIONS AVAILABLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. LET APPLE KNOW OF ALL THE ERRORS. IN FUTURE APPLE SHOULD CREATE PROGRAMS FOR EACH CATEGORY OF COMPUTERS,TEST, CORRECT THE RELEASE. EVERYTHING WILL WORK QUITE SMOOTHLY WITH POSSIBLY MINOR GLITCHES.

Me too, flashes like this half way during boot for a brief moment. It doesn't seem to adversely affect anything once booted. I just assumed it's something like gpu drivers initialising during the boot or something like that. It never did it before though and it does look a bit rubbish when it does it.

Are you getting at shut down a missing spinning progress wheel?  As for the discolouration at start up and no spinning progress  wheel at out shut down this matter is now closed. Apple engineers will have to correct this and other problems of their creation. I want them to take their time and to be more Thorough with preparation.

Three steps, DEVELOP, TEST AND PRESENT, FOR EACH CATEGORY OF COMPUTERS .

i got the same problem with a brand new iMac.
After 5 days of contact with A-Mac and Apple, they thought it has to do with the hardware, so i received a new one in exchange of the last one.
Updated again right away out of the box to sierra and Bam! , again the same problem.
What should i do ? A-Mac and Apple Netherlands didn't heard of this but now i see i am not the only one.
