Q: How to add multiple photos to iCloud Drive?

L.S.

I want to use iCloud Drive to share some of my photos with my mother. I've used Dropbox for that up till now, but now that I've got the upgrade for 50GB of iCloud storage that seems the better choice.

However, unlike Dropbox I seem only able to select one photo at a time for iCloud Drive (Photos > Select > Add to iCloud Drive). Am I missing something here?

With kind regards,

No, she can't. On my own devices iCloud Photo Library is NOT turned on. I can't see the Camera Roll of my iPad with my iPhone and vice versa because of that. I don't want to share every photo I take with my own iPhone and own iPads, just some manually selected pictures of her grandchildren (she's an elderly lady). The question is, if iCloud Photo Storage is turned ON on her device, and OFF on my devices, will it still upload every picture on those devices on which iCloud Photo Storage is turned OFF (because we share the same apple ID for instance). To make the question easier: disregard the fact that I share this ID with my mother. Let's say it's about my own devices. Let's say I have two iDevices, one on which iCloud Photo Library is turned ON and one on which it is turned OFF. Both devices contain photos and obviously have the same Apple ID. Will only the photos on the first device be transferred to iCloud?

And another thing: It seems like the pictures she opened in that Shared album are really downloaded to her iPad only temporarily, because after the iPad restarts, memory is a bit up again.

Some light on the first matter would be nice.

    No. Off is off.

If the iCloud Photo Library is enabled on device A, photos from device A will sync with the iCloud storage for the same Apple ID that is signed in to on device A. Again, syncing with the iCloud Photo Library is driven by an Apple ID, NOT a device.

It's a combination of the same Apple ID and the library being enabled on any device that starts the syncing.

And another thing: It seems like the pictures she opened in that Shared album are really downloaded to her iPad only temporarily, because after the iPad restarts, memory is a bit up again.

I don't believe this is true. Define "a bit"

Test this by turning off her wifi or use Airplane Mode. Can she see the photos in the shared albums while offline?

I don't think you can dismiss the shared Apple ID factor here.

What do you want to accomplish? What is the goal? That you have 50GB of cloud storage is moot. Her iPad must be able to store the content you are syncing with her.

My goal I have mentioned in my second post or so. I want to share manually selected pictures, and by switching to iCloud ONLY on my mothers iPad I avoid that her iPad gets flooded. I have plenty of space in my 50 GB of icloud (I use it only for backups of my device since I store my photos on my NAS).

So, if her device is the only one of my iDevices that has iCloud Photo Library turned on (while Photo Sharing is turned on on all devices) this should work?

As I have said, that is not possible using iCloud Photo Library.

The Photo Library on iCloud is synced in it's entirety to each subscribed device. There are no selective or manual options.

    All or nothing.

If you turn OFF her iCloud Photo Library and turn ON ONLY her Photo Sharing, her iPad will only receive ONLY the photos you have placed in ANY shared albums on your device. This assumes YOU have turned on Photo Sharing in your iCloud photo settings. For what you want, it doesn't matter what your iCloud Photo Library settings are.

If you keep your library OFF, you are not using ANY of your iCloud storage as your photos are ONLY on your device.

Again, the amount of iCloud storage you have is irrelevant. Shared Albums are NOT Part of your iCloud storage. they take up space on each device not not on your iCloud.

If this is what you have set up, her device is not able to store the number of photos you are sharing with her. No amount of iCloud storage will fix that. You can enable optimization in her iCloud photo settings to reduce the size of her locally stored photos.

"The Photo Library on iCloud is synced in it's entirety to each subscribed device. There are no selective or manual options." > it's still not clear to me if it will sync with the devices that have iCloud Photo Library turned off, which I do not want. I just want to get the pictures from my mothers iPad to iCloud so I can free up space on her iPad so she can open those Shared Photo Albums . And you said "off is off" in a previous post.

I get that those Shared Photo Albums will not be stored in iCloud. Really, I get that, alright? I just want to store the Photos THAT ARE ALREADY ON HER iPAD on the iCloud, to free up space.

This has been a case of tunnel vision. I just wanted this to work with iCloud, but it just doesn't. I've decided to use a Google Drive account to share with my mother (and mother in law). It's much more flexible than these "all-or-nothing" limitations of the iCloud. I'll stick to the iCloud for backups, which works great. For sharing the way I want it, Google Drive seems to be a better fit.
