Q: iPhone 7 Plus - Camera focus issue

I have had my new iPhone 7+ for a limited amount of time and so far been happy with the product.

But I seem to have a problem with the camera on the phone. Most of the time the camera works as it should, but randomly the screen will go 100% blurry/out of focus and there is nothing I can do about it. I have tried to tap on the screen, press on the screen, changed camera modes, turned on/off hdr, live etc. but nothing happens, just a blurry screen and no "hunt for focus" and no red square to indicate focus area.

I am able to shut down the camera app, re-open it and it works as it should once more.

Anyone with similar problem?

To rule out a software issue, try these steps:

    1. Force restart the phone by holding the sleep and volume down button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data.

    2. In case this does not work, set it back to factory settings, without using the latest backup. Test the camera. If it works, restore from the backup.

Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support

    3. If factory resetting does not help, get the phone checked by Apple:

    Start a service request

Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider

    Make an Apple Store appointment

I've had the same issue on two occasions—the first of which was immediately following its initial set up on 9/16. The second occasion was yesterday, nearly two weeks later. For me, exiting the camera app did not resolve the issue. Rebooting the phone DID help.

Thanks for the help both of you I will see if it helps.

I had to reboot it today as well. It was completely frozen and I could not even get to the home menu or lock screen.

Last night I was going to go to the Apple Store in Nashville while traveling to ask them about the problem and before I went there I tried to take a picture and the camera went almost black and I got the yellow focus rectangle and it started strobing between this black and sort of trying to focus and then black etc. While something told me not to, because I wanted the Apple Store to see this, I decided to close the camera app and restart it and it just started doing the same thing again, thankfully. When I got to the Apple Store I turned it on and it was still doing the same thing and they gave me a new phone. There's clearly a problem with it that was not going to go away. Those cameras are awfully tiny and it's amazing that they can get the percentage of them to work that they do. It's faulty hardware, I'm sure.

Yes, same exact issue! Had it on my 6S Plus and it made me absolute insane to miss so many photo opportunities and could not wait to get the 7 Plus to have a working camera and of course have the same exact issue where roughly half the time it opens to a frozen blurry screen that turns black. I have returned my 6S no less then 3 times and every single phone eventually has the same issue. Its just sickening that Apple cant have a phone with a camera that gets frozen on opening at times when the main focus and hype is always about the camera. I own apple everything and love there products but this issue is beyond unacceptable and disheartening!

I have actually not had the problem since I initially asked the question (knock on wood)... But I am now looking into other camera apps instead of the native version (not because of the problem, but because it seems there are better options out there). It will be interesting to see if the problem also occur with these apps as well.

Hopefully it's a software issue that can be fixed in the future, I can't be bothered to start repair cases etc.

Good luck to all of you, may this be a seldom issue.

Out of curiosity... Do something similar happen to you in other apps? The other day I had a problem when I was out catching PokeMons with my kid. The whole screen except corners became unresponsive several times. Rebooting the app solved the problem.

I have installed a couple of new camera apps, haven't seen any issues with these so far.

At one point I was starting to think about screen protection and if this could "trigger" some sort of odd behaviour, but I guess that isn't related to the problem at all. I just haven't used this before, and now with a thick protection like Panzerglass I am getting a bit paranoid...

Had same fault with my iPhone 7+ and iOS 10.0.2, except camera was constantly changing focus to clear and blurry again. App restart didn't help. Had to restart phone and all worked again. Guess, its more likely software bug

i also suspected a problem due to the screen protection when using the front camera but

1.) problem remained after removing the screen protection

2.) problem also occurs with the normal backside camera

I had the same problem last week and took it for service. Apple is sending out a new replacement device

Unfortunitly though 3 coworkers phones also lost camera operations! Does not sound like a isolated incident anymore

I Had the same issue, I bought my iphone 7 32 gig and 3 days later my front and rear camera were freezing all the time, all black screen on both side and nothing to do about it, after like 20 mins it started working again but the issue was always there so I went to apple and I was happy that the apple person saw that issue, so we did reset and set as a new phone and it worked but the next day the same issue again so they gave me a new phone and then again that issue ! So I change it again for a new iphone 7 and still that issue, now its my fourth iphone 7 amd since 1 week its working.... anyway its a very annoying issue and waste of my time to go apple store all the time
