Q: Mail (and other apps) quit using PaperOptions plug-in

Since upgrading to macOS Sierra (currently at 10.12) every time I print from Mail (v10.0 (3226) Mail exits and throws this exception: "Mail quit unexpectedly while using the XeroxPaperOptions plug-in". Some other apps including Quicken for Mac and Excel also quit on print. Print from Safari and Chrome work fine.

I reported the problem to Xerox, but they have not yet been able to track down a problem. Speaking to a friend, he reported a similar "quit using PaperOption plug-in" when using an HP ink jet printer, so it doesn't seem limited to the Xerox Phaser 6360DN I use in the office. The Printer and Scanner page report that the Phaser is using Xerox driver version: 2.0.14

This is probably a Xerox bug, and they will have to fix it in updated drivers. If you post the full crash log, or the excerpt that shows the crashing thread, the cause will be clearer.

If it is because of the Xerox plugin: to get around the crash if you don't use this feature, remove the XeroxPaperOptions plugin from /Library/Printers/Xerox/PDEs/.

Thanks John! I tried removing the XeroxPaperOptions.plugin from /Library/Printers/Xerox/PDEs and rebooting, but then print from Mail threw a segmentation fault via the XeroxImaging plugin (clipped trace below). I'll bug Xerox for a driver update.

Until then, I switched to the LPD Generic Postscript driver, which supports the Xerox 6360DN duplex option and seems to work fine for the basic printing work I do in the office.

    cheers,
    Greg

Sorry, roundtrip, I thought that would get past the crash. It seems there is something more serious going on than a bad plugin. Hopefully Xerox will be able to help.
